Add Weather Gadget to Gmail

A gadget is an application that extends the functionality of your Gmail account. You can add several gadgets to your Gmail account. These include, but are not limited to, Google Docs, Tasks, Google Calendar and Wikipedia Search. In fact, if you are interested in monitoring your local weather, Gmail allows you to add a weather widget. One of the advantages of using gadgets is that you do not need to install them on your local computer.

Log in to your Gmail account, select “Settings” and then choose “Labs.”

Select the “Enable” radio button next to the “Add any gadget by URL” section and then click on the “Save changes” at the bottom of the page.

Visit the iGoogle Gadgets page (see Resources), type “weather” in the search field and then hit “Search.”

Choose one of the weather gadgets displayed and then click on gadget title’s link.

Go to your browser’s address bar and then copy the URL of the weather gadget. To correctly copy the URL of the gadget, only copy the URL displayed after the “=” sign on the address bar.

For example, if your address bar displays the following:

http://www.google.com/ig/directory?type=gadgets&URL=www.google.com/ig/modules/builtin_weather.xml

Copy “www.google.com/ig/modules/builtin_weather.xml”

Go back to “Settings” in your Gmail account and then choose the “Gadgets” tab.

Paste the URL of the weather gadget in the field provided and then select “Add,” making sure you type “Http://” before pasting the URL.

Return to your Gmail account. You should see the newly added weather gadget.
