Mentally Challenged Couples

It might seem an odd question to ask at first, but whether or not those with certain mental challenges can marry ties into their ability to be bound by law. For instance, sometimes people are not charged with crimes based on mental status that sets them outside the law. What needs to be discerned is the line that determines whether or not a person can enter into a legally binding contract such as marriage.

Definition of the Problem
One key to whether or not a couple can marry when mental problems are present is the type of mental challenges and the severity of those problems. Typically, the degree of disability is determined by the IQ of the people in question. Once a person's IQ is consistently established as below 70, they are typically grouped into a category that ranges between light and severe mental retardation. This is when legal questions regarding marriage begin to arise.

State Law
Whether or not a person with a developmental disability is allowed to marry is something that is determined by the individual states. If people born with these conditions choose to marry, usually the union is allowed to proceed regardless of local law. However, some states don't have any laws of this type and people will have no problems getting married. In Maine, a marriage could be potentially annulled if a person was proved to have mental retardation to a degree where they might not be able to make an informed decision about marriage. Marriage of severely mentally handicapped people is prohibited by Maine law.

Challenges
The problems with these types of marriages arises when someone objects to the union of someone that is developmentally challenged; for instance, if a loved one, parent, family member or caregiver decides that a wedding shouldn't take place. In that case, the person can file a legal complaint where they state that the person is not mentally competent to enter into a marriage contract. The court then has to weigh the concerns of the guardian against the constitutional rights of the person getting married.

Reproduction
Another legal concern that is connected to the marriage of challenged individuals is that of reproduction. Some express concerns over the ability of married couples with severe challenges to raise children in a safe environment. A married couple where both parties were developmentally disabled would stand the risk in some cases of having children removed from the home if deemed unfit as parents.

Write a Man of Honor Speech

In addition to playing a significant role in the groom's life and having the responsibility of passing along the rings at the altar, tradition holds that the man of honor must deliver a speech at the wedding reception. Although delivering a man of honor or best man speech can be nerve-racking, there are certain steps you can take to help you adequately prepare for the speech.

Prepare for the speech. Start thinking about the speech at least one month in advance. Think about various happy, funny and sad moments you have had with the groom, and write notes about each of them. Think about a story you can tell about the bride and groom, such as the first time they met or a particularly funny moment.

Write the introduction. When writing the speech, it is nice to begin by thanking the parents of the bride and groom. Plan on showing your appreciation by toasting the parents, which is a classy move. Mention how long you have known the groom, and state how honored you are to be the man of honor at the wedding.

Write a story about you and the groom. Sharing a particularly fond memory can be a great way to break the ice with your audience. Refer to the notes you took when writing, and start writing the story in detail. Whether you decide to share a childhood memory or a recent event, ensure the story communicates why the groom is an important part of your life. Using humor is a great way to engage the crowd and keep them interested. Once you have written the story in detail, go back and create bullet points for each of the key parts of your story. You don't want to read line-by-line when delivering your speech; you should engage and interact with the audience instead.

Write a story about you, the bride and the groom or just the bride and the groom. Think about the first time you met, a funny story that involves the three of you or something positive the groom shared with you about his bride-to-be. It's okay to berate the groom a bit if he's your friend, but stay away from embarrassing stories about the bride. Again, once you've written a story, narrow it down to several bullet points you can refer to during your speech.

Write a conclusion. The last part of your speech should communicate how honored you are to be a part of the wedding. State how important your relationship with the groom is to you, and mention how happy you are for the couple. The speech should conclude by asking guests to raise their glasses in a toast to the bride and groom.

Meet Singles in Your Area

Going out for a night on the town and having fun is what most of us enjoy doing. However, having to do this alone is not as much fun. Being able to enjoy good times with others that share your similar interests makes the experience even better. Most busy professionals find it extremely difficult to locate other singles in their immediate area because of their heavy workloads. With a few simple tips and suggestions, you'll soon learn how to meet singles in your area.

Meet Singles in Your Area
Try an online dating website, such as Match, to discover other eligible singles in your local area. Not only will you have the opportunity to find out the interests and thoughts of a potential suitor, but you can do this in the privacy of your own home. Another benefit of using an online dating website is that you can also do it during the time that is most convenient to you. Instead of having to add one more task to your constantly busy schedule, you can visit online dating sites during your free time.

Attend some of the community events available in your area. Doing this will help you “blow off some steam” and enjoy a few hours of entertainment. Meeting other single people in a happy and carefree environment can help to take the stress out of a first impression. Taking the time to volunteer your services is also a great way to meet other singles in your area.

Get involved with your local organizations. You'll gain more exposure to other singles that enjoy the same things that you do. Not only will you increase the chance of finding a romantic interest, but you'll also have a chance to add a few more friends to your entourage. There are so many local organizations that love having singles participate in activities, such as community outreach programs, mentor programs and a few others.

Ask your friends and family members about some of their single friends. Most of the time they are already trying to fix you up with other known singles. Tap into this fruitful resource and discover some new possibilities. You'd be surprised at how many couples were put together by their friends or family members. Since these people are more familiar with your preferences and pet peeves, they will have a good idea of what type of person you'd be interested in.

Best Places to Live for Single Women

The U.S. Census Bureau counted 102 million single people living in the United States in 2011. A little over half of those people were women. If you’re a single woman looking for love, a whole host of factors, including the city you live in, can affect your search for the right mate. Studies on the best places to live for single women found that those who are looking for love and those who are happy flying solo and want a great place to live may want to consider the West Coast, where a number of towns top people's lists.

San Jose, California
San Jose is the biggest metro area with the best marriage market, according to the data compiled by Pew Research in October 2014. This city is home to the heart of the tech empire, Silicon Valley, and there are plenty of single, employed men for the solo lady to meet. According to Pew, there are 114 single men with jobs for every 100 women living in San Jose, and in 2012, 57 percent of adults between the ages of 25 and 34 living in the metro area, which includes Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, were single.

San Francisco
Beautiful, hilly San Francisco also gets a top rating when it comes to the best places to live for single women. Not only does it rank as one of the top cities on Pew’s 2014 list, but according to Shape magazine, it’s also No. 2 on the American Human Development Index, which measures data on women’s educational levels, life expectancy and median salaries. This means that the women living in San Francisco are well-educated, healthy, and have good jobs with decent salaries.

Denver, Colorado
For single women, the city of Denver has a lot of things going for it. The Denver metro area ranked high on Pew’s 2014 list of best cities for single women. According to Pew's data, there are 101 employed single men for every 100 women, and in 2012, 56 percent of young adults living in the area were not married. Furthermore, your chances of meeting a cute guy who’s in shape in Denver are pretty good. According to Shape magazine, the state of Colorado has some of the lowest levels of obesity in the country. Denver residents also enjoy a host of outdoor activities and a low cost of living.

San Diego
Yes, another California location. The state’s second-largest city showed itself to be a great place for single women to live across a number of different studies. It came in third, behind San Jose and Denver, on Pew’s 2014 list, and according to Rent.com, the men outnumber the women in the 18 to 34 age range. This beautiful city has a lot to offer: mountains, deserts, the Pacific Ocean, the San Diego zoo, and some of the best weather in the country. And according to Pew, 58 percent of young adults living in San Diego are unmarried.

Best Places for Retirement for Single Men

Retiring offers a variety of new opportunities to the single male, including starting over in a new place. While retirement can be an exciting and fun-focused time, you should also consider finances, living arrangements and access to healthcare when looking for a new place to live. Whether you're hoping for the chance to go on a first date in a sunny locale or begin a relationship in a new country, there are options to suit your needs.

San Francisco, California
San Francisco is a diverse city with a welcoming atmosphere for those from all backgrounds. Adults over the age of 65 make up nearly 14 percent of the city’s population, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2010. Traveling around to meet other retired singles is made simpler by the ferries, trolley cars, BART system and other transportation options across the city. Although the price tag of living in San Francisco can be intimidating to single men on a fixed income, the state of California does not tax social security income.

Panama City, Panama
Listed as one of U.S. News and World Report’s "10 Best Places to Retire Overseas in 2014," Panama City is typically valued for its gorgeous white sand beaches and tropical climate. Retirees can also enhance their social lives by taking advantage of Panama’s Pensionado Program, which offers such benefits as 50 percent off entertainment throughout the country, 25 percent off airline tickets and 15 percent off hospital bills, according to International Living magazine. Home to the largest public hospital in the country, Panama City also offers private, social security and specialized hospitals throughout the area.

Pittsfield, Massachusetts
Pittsfield is ranked as a metro area in which 52 percent of the 55-and-older population is single, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 article titled "10 Best Places for Single Seniors to Retire." This city, which is located in western Massachusetts, has a variety of cultural and recreational attractions, including country clubs, hiking trails and museums. The Pittsfield area is also home to nearly 30 retirement communities.

Algarve, Portugal
Algarve was ranked as 2014’s best place to retire, as well as one of the best places to retire overseas, by U.S. News and World Report. Algarve also offers a variety of housing options for retirees, such as Algarve Senior Living, which is a rental-based living community. Single men who are concerned about any language barrier during their dating endeavors will be pleased to know that English is among the most popular languages in the region. Romantic cliff-top views of the beach and sunny weather are just a few of the ways this area sets the scene for dating and romance.

Jackson, Mississippi
Jackson is known as a soulful city due to its musical roots in gospel, blues and jazz. As recently as 2010, Jackson boasted a nearly 50 percent population of singles over the age of 55, with nearly 40,000 single women from this population, according to the Consumer Affairs article "Best Places for Single Seniors." In addition to offering a large population of eligible singles at retirement age, Jackson made the list as one of the best places to retire for under $40,000, as reported by U.S. News and World Report.

Six Month Anniversary Ideas

Beginning a new relationship can be so wonderful and exciting. During those first few months together you learn so much about each other and begin to create so many memories. As you approach the anniversary of your first six months together, do something special to show him or her how much you care. You don't have to do anything extravagant; the key is to take what you have learned over the past months and create a meaningful anniversary celebration for the two of you.

Bed and Breakfast
A romantic way to celebrate your six-month anniversary is to stay the weekend at a bed and breakfast. If you have a wine country nearby you'll find a quaint bed and breakfast to take your love to. Many bed and breakfast inns will provide personalized services, like champagne in your room, if you tell them in advance you're celebrating a special anniversary.

Plan a Day of Highlights
Show the one you love how special your time together has been by taking her to all the most special places you've gone over the past six months from restaurants to museums to a beautiful mountain view. Women will love this, knowing their man remembers the special times and men will find this kind of celebration unique and romantic, too. End the date with a new place and tell your sweetheart how it's the beginning of the next six wonderful months together.

Create a Memory
Take your love on a special picnic. Pack the picnic basket with his favorite foods and wine. Take along a blanket to ensure comfort. Surprise him with hand-painted wine glasses with the date painted on them to commemorate the day. Once you are settled, take out a book of famous love letters or poems and begin reading. The romance of this gesture will mean so much to your love, creating a beautiful new memory you will have forever.

Places to Meet Single Woman

Single women are everywhere, and there is really no telling where you might meet a nice, young lady. Some places offer more chances of meeting them, however. Whatever the location, the more opportunities there are for one-on-one conversation and interaction, the better the chances that you will make a connection with a single woman.

Work
Although many companies have policies against dating colleagues, and a dating relationship turned sour can negatively affect your work environment, work still remains a very good place to meet single women. Many single women spend the bulk of their time at work or in work-related functions. Also, activities that are related to work, such as happy hours and lunch hours, are also good places to meet single women.

Weddings
Weddings are great places for meeting single women, because they take place in a romantic atmosphere that encourages mingling. Given the atmosphere, it can sometimes be easier to approach a lady and ask about her relationship status without bringing too much attention to oneself. It is also sometimes easier to distinguish single women from women in relationships at weddings, because they are usually in the company of their friends.

Get-togethers with Friends
Parties or get-togethers with friends are a great place to meet single women, because the atmosphere is usually relaxed and there are usually mutual friends available to break the ice. Many women also bring their single girlfriends along to get-togethers in the hopes of having a good time and possibly meeting a date.

Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to meet women with similar values and interests. Many single women volunteer at soup kitchens, food banks, charity races and other such places. Bonding around a volunteer experience can also be a great way to build a friendship, and possibly a relationship, with a lady.

Church
The level of socializing done in churches makes them a great place to meet single women. Many churches have activities geared toward single members, and there are also opportunities for more interaction with single women on a regular basis.

Speed Dating
For busy professionals, speed dating is an excellent way to meet single women. All of the women who go on speed dates are single, and with just a few minutes to make an impression, and so many people to meet in one night, the possibilities of meeting single women are practically endless.

Best Places for Couples

There are many places to go and things to do for couples, even for young or teenage couples who aren't willing to spend a lot of money for a great date. Young couples may prefer a cheaper date, such as hanging out at one another's houses or spending the night in cooking, or may venture out to the cinema, arcade or even plan a road trip together.

Cinema
The cinema is a common hot spot for young couples, especially teenagers. Aside from the enjoyment of watching a movie with your partner, cinemas also usually offer venues for eating, or at the very least a wide assortment of salty and sugary snacks. The cinema is also a good place to be alone if you are the type that prefers to cuddle and kiss instead of watch the movie.

Arcade
Arcade dates can be combined with a meal from a fast food joint for a date that is just as satisfying as a fancy night on the town, but better for your wallet. Arcades work well for dates because young couples can participate in games either by working together or playing against each other in friendly competition. Another benefit is that $20 will usually go a long way in an arcade.

The Kitchen
Cooking together can be fun. Browse through a cookbook or recipe website and pick out a four course meal to prepare. If you want to be challenged, pick a recipe you are unfamiliar with. Be sure to choose recipes that both of you can participate in; for example, one of you marinates steaks and the other grills them. The results can be delicious, disastrous and entertaining.

Road Trip
Go on a spontaneous road trip. Take the weekend or even a whole week and go wherever the wind takes you. Pack some snacks for the road and pick a direction. There are several ways you could go about picking your destination. You could simply pick a direction and drive, stopping along the way at whatever interests you. You could also give your road trip a theme, such as touring the amusement parks or carnivals in your state, or do a "world's biggest/smallest" attraction trip.

Your Place or Mine
Sometimes the best hangout spots are the ones right at home. Inviting one another over to your respective homes gives you a host of options for things to do. You could have a movie night, order food in, play games or have a party with all of your friends.

Fun Games for Couples

Getting a conversation started can be a daunting task for some couples, and for others it is as natural as can be. Regardless of what type of couple you are, mixing it up with a conversation game can get you talking about things you may not normally be comfortable with or in a way that is new and exciting for you.

List It Up
Use the alphabet to come up with a list of things about yourself while your partner does the same. Take turns guessing what the other put for each letter and talk about your answers. Remember this is supposed to be fun and get you talking, not to turn into an argument, so if there is an answer you do not like, relax and just go with it.

Take One
Grab a bowl and fill it with one-word ideas that the two of you came up with and write on scrap paper. These ideas can be anything you want in one word, from pizza to body parts and anything in between. Take turns picking ideas from the bowl and say the first thing that comes to mind when you read it.

Favorite Things
Everyone has a favorite food, color, place or movie, so use these to create a conversation game. Go down the line sharing your favorite foods or restaurants and what you like most about them; follow that with your favorite movies, and see how many you have in common. Next thing you know, your calendar is marked for a date night, dinner and a movie.

Word Connection
This is about as old as it get when it comes to conversation games, but it can be a blast. Begin with something as simple as where you are from, and then your partner just says the first thing that comes to mind. This can go absolutely anywhere and usually does. A conversation about what sports you played as a kid or if you had any pets growing up can come from something as crazy as "macaroni and cheese." Make the first word something personal if that is the direction you want the conversation to take.

Best Places to Meet Single Men in Carolina

The port city of Wilmington, North Carolina, is not only a place with a rich heritage, but is considered one of the most scenic and beautiful cities in the nation. It boasts a breathtaking downtown river walk along Cape Fear, historical buildings and a variety of museums. And for women Wilmington is a great city to meet single men, since it has a vigorous nightlife and is filled with commercial establishments that promote friendliness.

Ibiza Nightclub
Snag a single man at Ibiza Nightclub (ibizawilmington.com) downtown, which is open from Wednesday to Saturday. Each night features something different. For instance, Wednesday is karaoke night; Thursday and Friday are drag king and queen nights. Saturday is the main party night, and this is the perfect time for single women to meet and dance with Wilmington's eligible bachelors. The club is open from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

City Limits Saloon
For women who enjoy the wilder side of life, the City Limits Saloon (hellyeahwilmington.com) is the place to be. The bar features bull riding as of its premiere attractions. It is open Thursdays through Saturdays. However, Thursday is one of the best nights to go since the bar features a male-versus-female bull-riding challenge and an underwear-themed night where men are encouraged to strip to their boxers and girls to their bikinis. City Limits Saloon features a selection of discounted alcoholic drinks and free rides on the bull.

Port City Java Coffee House
One of the best places to meet singles is in coffee shops. While Wilmington has a number of different coffee shops around town, many residents recommend Port City Java (portcityjava.com) downtown. Bring a book, order a cup of Joe and sit down with a good book. Sooner or later, a man will walk up to you and start chatting you up. This coffee shop gets a lot of foot traffic, especially in the mornings and late afternoons, allowing a woman to scout out the many men in the city.

St. James Parish
Any female looking for a quality catch should always consider scoping the men inside a church, particularly the St. James Parish (stjamesp.org). This particular holy place has a large number of male patrons ranging from the old and married to the young and single. And since they are in church, chances are that any single men in this church will have good morals, perfect for a woman looking for a loyal and trustworthy man.

How to Spot Violent Partners

Although there is no single way that all abusers behave, certain signs may indicate a stronger tendency toward violence, explains the National Domestic Violence Hotline in the article "Know the Red Flags of Abuse." However, even if you do not see the common precursors to violent behavior, if your partner makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe is any way, do not second guess yourself. Instead, seek out help from friends, family or a domestic violence hotline.

Out-of-Control Anger
Partners prone to violence may show signs that they are not in control of their anger. Throwing or breaking things, punching walls or yelling at you can signal that a partner has violent tendencies. Even if the anger is not directed at you, anger management issues can still lead to abuse. For example, a partner who kicks in a door because he is angry at a co-worker may eventually become violent toward you.

Controlling Behavior
The cycle of violence often begins with efforts to control one's partner. For example, a potentially violent partner may try to limit his girlfriend's contact with her family or friends. Likewise, he may try to limit her ability to work, maintain financial independence or make decisions without consulting him. In some cases, potentially violent individuals threaten self-harm if their partner speaks up or tries to leave the relationship.

Substance Abuse
Alcohol or drug abuse is often a contributing factor in violent relationships. Although substance abuse is rarely the underlying cause of abuse, it is one of the most common precursors to violence, explains the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in the publication "Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse." Intoxication or withdrawal might exacerbate anger or cause an individual with abusive tendencies to lose control. Additionally, abusers or those prone to violence may blame their behavior on intoxication rather than the real, underlying issues. This can make it difficult for their partners to identify potentially dangerous behavioral patterns.

Blaming Others
Potential abusers are often reluctant to take responsibility for their behavior, particularly within the relationship. A potentially abusive partner may tell you that you are the cause of all the relationship problems. He may also blame you for angry outbursts because you "made him angry" with your behavior. In short, persons with abusive personalities do not understand or acknowledge their role in conflicts or their own emotional states.

Date Man With Kids

Dating a man with kids differs a bit from dating a childless guy as the guy’s ex is usually out of the picture -- not dropping off kids every weekend. Not to mention the children’s museum doesn’t often make it onto the date night hot spot list for guys without kids, and spontaneity is almost certainly a childless concept. A relationship with a dad can be a bit complicated, but if you take it slow and learn the family’s dynamics, you have the opportunity for a rewarding relationship.

Secretive Beginnings
Kids can form attachments quickly, which means the man you’re dating has to tread carefully, advises the American Academy of Pediatrics on their website Healthychildren.org. His children require stability and bringing home a different woman each week to meet the kids can drastically upset that calm. In the early weeks or months of your relationship, be prepared for a somewhat undercover relationship. As it develops, the two of you can discuss whether or not you’re on the same page, and then you’ll have an opportunity to meet the kids, advises the Kidshealth article "How Can I Help My Child Deal With My Dating After Divorce?" However, you should consider discussing tough issues before that happens, such as the possibility of more children in the future. If you don’t have any children yet, and his diapering days are done, this may be a deal breaker for the relationship. Get it out in the open now, before moving to the next step.

Meet and Greet
When you and your partner have decided it’s time for you to meet the kids, take it slowly. Let your boyfriend introduce you as a friend and build toward sharing your romantic involvement. And once the introductions have been made, get ready for some family-friendly activities. If you’ve never visited an indoor playground before or had a slumber party with 8-year-old girls, you’ll have plenty of opportunity for some childish fun now. However, you might not be the kids’ new best friend overnight, says Healthychildren.org in "Dating After Divorce." How and when a child lets down his guard is a unique transition, so be prepared for some resistance and try not to take it as personal rejection.

Kids First
While it's normal to want to be the top priority to your partner, when you're dating a man with children you'll have to accept that his kids come first -- which is a good thing. You don’t want to commit to a man who will brush off plans with his children to sneak out for a date with you. Attending his youngster's little league championship will outweigh an afternoon at the movies, and tending to sore tummies will cancel out a romantic weekend trip at a moment's notice. Be flexible and maintain some independence so you can take care of yourself during the parent-child-only times.

Mama Limits
There is a thin line between being involved in the lives of your partner's children and assuming a motherly role and overstepping your boundaries. It might be tempting to create a tight-knit family unit, but it can be damaging to children psychologically when both biological parents are involved in their lives, warns psychologist Ruwa Sabbagh in "5 Things to Consider Before Dating Someone Who Has Kids" in Canadian Living. You can play an important role, being involved and helping to guide the children's lives, but stay away from wanting to replace their mother. Support your partner in his parenting decisions and avoid assuming the disciplinarian role in the household. If your boyfriend and his ex are co-parenting the children, consider whether you’ll be comfortable with your boyfriend’s regular involvement and whether you're OK having involvement with the ex, too.

Tips to Date a Single Mom

While you may not be new to the dating scene, vying for the heart of a single mom may land you in virgin territory. Unlike other women that you have dated, a single mom has to consider her own feelings, as well as how her relationship with you will affect the life and feelings of her child. Learning to plan kid-friendly dates, being understanding about her scheduling limitations, and realizing that her priorities may not always place you first are just some of the considerations to make before pursuing a single mom.

Plan your dates, phone calls and interaction in advance. One of the biggest differences between single life and life with children is the amount of planning involved in raising a child. Nap time, homework and quality time are all major components of a mom's day that you may not be used to. To account for her busy schedule, set up a time when it is good to call, preferably after her kids go to bed, and plan dates or trips around alternating custody schedules or trips to grandma's house.

Pace yourself, don't rush to be intimate. Sociologist Sharon Sassler, along withher fellow researchers Fenaba Addo and Daniel Lichter, suggest in their August 2012 publication in the "Journal of Marriage and Family," that early sexual involvement can lead to less long-term relationship happiness among women than when compared to couples who waited to become intimate.

Reassure the single mom in your life that you are supportive of her deciding when you will meet her children and in what capacity you will interact with them. Slowly being introduced into a child's life may help the child to adjust to a new figure in her life.

Allow your relationship with her children to evolve naturally. You're not their parent, and they make take some time to warm up to you. Engage in child-friendly activities such as going to the park or meeting them at the zoo to break the ice.

Avoid bad-mouthing her ex, especially in front of her children. Regardless of the reason for their breakup, her ex likely plays a significant role in both her and her children's lives. There will be times when they disagree, but talking negatively about the father of her children may serve only to upset her or the kids. Instead, be supportive of her decisions in the matter.

Meet Men When You Are a Single Mom

The life of a single mom sure can be busy. Between your career and children and housework, you're often left with little time to yourself, much less time to go on dates. On top of this, it can seem challenging to find a man who adores your kids just as much as he adores you.
Meeting men when you're a single mom may seem a bit daunting at first, but it's certainly not an impossible task. From online dating to joining a local hiking group, there are plenty of avenues for meeting eligible bachelors in your area.

Try online dating. With millions of Americans turning to the Internet for love, you might just find your Mr. Right online. Internet dating works well for single moms since it saves you time by screening out the bad apples. Plus, you can email and call any potential dates before you meet them in person. Popular dating sites include eHarmony and Match.com. You can also join a site that caters specifically to one-parent families, like Meet Single Parents.

Join a community social group. Become a member of a hiking group, ballroom dance team, movie club, or whatever else tickles your fancy. Finding a new hobby gives you the opportunity to have fun and to meet new men in your area. Sites like Meetup.com and SocialGrid.com offer listings of community groups all over the country. You can also check the bulletin boards at your community center and library to see what events are happening in your area.

Head back to school. Whether you're finishing a degree or taking a couple classes for fun, your local college can be a good way to meet single men. If your schedule allows, sign up for an evening class since these courses attract older students who are trying to juggle a career and education (like many single moms out there). Also, consider joining a college-sponsored club or organization to meet guys outside of your classes.

Go to church. If you belong to a religious organization, going to church is a great way to meet men who share your moral and religious beliefs. Get involved with your congregation by joining a committee or church group, which will help you meet the eligible bachelors in your spiritual community. Many churches host events for their single members too so try to attend a few of these. If your congregation doesn't provide these events, ask your church leader if you can put one together.

Hire a matchmaker. A matchmaker saves you time by weeding out the men who don't suit your preferences. Also, a matchmaker can specifically set you up with single fathers or with guys who don't mind dating a woman with children. In short, matchmaking can be a helpful resource for busy single moms who don't have the time to scour for dates.

Tips & Warnings

If you decide to try online dating, write your profile with your own interests in mind. Of course, you can talk about how passionate you are about your kids, but you also need to talk about things that you enjoy doing on your own. David Wygant, a dating expert for Yahoo! Personals, believes too many single moms use their profiles to write about what activities they do with their kids rather than what activities they'd enjoy doing with their dates. When you join an online dating site, post a picture of yourself onto your profile. A good photo will boost your profile considerably. Ask a friend who's handy with a camera to snap a few shots of you. (Remember to smile!) Use a photo with only you in it---no pets, no kids, and no group of friends. Be patient. Finding the right guy for you and your kids may take some time. Don't stress out if you're not going out on dates or meeting the right guy.
When dating online, be wary of how much contact information you list on your site. Don't provide your telephone number, address, or personal email address.

Date a Man With a Baby

Only 3.5 percent of the 18 million children living in single-family homes live with the father, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Although this is a relatively small number, fathers of babies still make up a significant segment of the dating world. Whether he is divorced, separated or simply a baby daddy, if you are dating a man with a baby, you're facing a greater challenge than if he had no children.

Be flexible. Fathers are not always able to keep dates. When children are ill, or require the presence of their father at a function, the time or location—or even the date itself—may need to be altered.

Be open to bringing the baby on activities. A babysitter no-show may throw the date into turmoil, if either individual is not open to occasionally bringing the baby along on a date. Bring along baby toys and age-appropriate books to show your understanding of the situation.

Offer to have the baby come along on a date to a child-friendly (and age-appropriate) location. Research places in your area that offer interesting activities for both the baby and dating adults. Even if the father has not asked about bringing the child along, your offer may lead to the two of you spending more time together, if he knows you are okay with him bringing the baby along occasionally.

Do not discuss the mother of the baby. This is a no-win dating situation. If the man brings up any details, simply nod and change the subject. Avoid offering your opinion or advice as much as possible.

Don't offer parenting advice, even when it appears the man may be going about child rearing in a manner that contradicts your experience and background. Listen to any comments he may make about his parenting situation, but do not become involved or take sides in any parenting disputes. The man may want to chat about parenting situations, but keep the discussion on a hypothetical level, without critiquing specific actions.

Be considerate of special days. Family holidays are a time that the man may feel he should be with the baby. Respect his feelings, and select a different day for the date.

Be considerate of timing. The baby may require a nap at a specified time that conflicts with a dating activity. The child may also need to be in bed at a certain hour that requires the date to end early. Respect these needs. These actions will put less stress on the father and allow him to date, while meeting the needs of his child at the same time.

Dating a Single Father

With the number of marriages that end in divorce, it is not uncommon to find yourself dating a man who has children from a previous relationship. Though this is not an impossible situation, there are a few things you need to do if you want the relationship to be a success.

Sleep at Home
You should sleep at your home during the times his children are with him, especially for the first few months of your relationship. This helps set a good example for the children and may help prevent an awkward situation for dad. If your relationship progresses to the point where you become engaged, you can begin to ease yourself into the home, making yourself a more permanent fixture due to the increased level of commitment.

Do Not Interfere
When you first begin dating a single father, for the most part it's best not to offer him parenting advice or criticize his decisions. If he does something you don't agree with, or lets poor behavior go unpunished, bite your tongue. As you become more serious, you may decide it's time to weigh in. This, however, should be done when the children are not around.

Be Kind
When your relationship is new, consider waiting a while to meet the kids. They could grow attached to you before you have time to determine the direction of the relationship. Once you have become a permanent fixture in dad's life, show kindness to his kids. Whether or not you agree with how they behave, a good relationship will depend on acceptance of his children. This does not mean that you need to accept disrespect from children. If this becomes a problem, take dad off to the side and talk to him about it. It is his place to reprimand his kids and let them know you are a part of his life.

Stay Out of It
Your boyfriend may have an ex-wife or a long-term love interest and the relationship likely didn't end on a happy note. While you may only be hearing one side of the story, try to avoid involvement in their relationship. And no matter what you may think of the children's mother, never say anything against her to them or in front of them. They could end up resenting you for it, no matter how true it may be.

Ask For More Attention
The longer your relationship lasts, the more time you are entitled to with dad. While you shouldn't expect him to be less of a father, you have the right to be considered equal in his life. If for any reason you feel you are being slighted, be honest with him; he can't know what you're thinking unless you tell him. He may be feeling guilty about the emotional effects his new relationship is having on the kids, which results in over-compensating by spending less time with you and more time with them.

Date Women With Kids

Dating a woman who has children can be much more challenging than dating a woman without children. When dating a woman with kids, you have to understand that you will not be the primary focus of her life. That doesn't mean you can't have a rewarding relationship with a woman and her kids. It just means there'll be obstacles and roadblocks in addition to the normal stress of dating. Here's more advice about dating women with kids.

Time Considerations
A woman with kids may have a busy schedule with work and parenting duties. Time for dating and getting to know someone can be somewhat limited. Of course this isn't always the case, but in the early stages of dating a woman with kids, be prepared to play second or third fiddle. Jobs, baseball practices and ballet concerts will most certainly take precedent over dating. Be patient, especially if you feel the relationship has growth potential.

Meeting the Kids
Most mothers won't introduce you to their kids until you've established a solid relationship. Meeting the kids is a big step. Take it slow. Make sure you're polite. Be a gentleman, and always be kind to the kids. If there are any discipline problems with the kids, let the mother address the situation. Treat the mother and kids with warmth and kindness, and there isn't any reason you shouldn't receive the same in return.

Expect an increase in your dating expenses. Your dating activities will probably incorporate the kids, creating more of a family type environment. Take the kids and your lady on dates to the swimming pool, or to Dave & Buster's where you can play games and eat. The bottom line is to have fun together.

Family & Getting Serious
After dating for a long time, you and your lady friend may get much more serious. It's important to establish a solid relationship with the children. Continue to have patience with the situation as a whole. The kids will always come first and you may be a close second. At this point in the relationship, you may have developed an attachment to the children. That's great if the relationship lasts. However, in the event that you do break up, it can be a devastating situation for you and the kids, due to your possible role as father figure. You can't prevent this emotional low, but taking your time can help minimize the risk.

Tips on Dating Single Mother

Dating a single mother represents a departure from the normal dating atmosphere and rules. Because of the presence of children as well as their need and right to care, attention and consideration, you may find that you have a little extra work to do when pursuing a single mom. Although your dating life may not be as carefree as that of two single people, seeing someone with kids can still be rewarding. Being aware of the unique circumstance can go a long way toward making things easier.

The Kids Will Come First
Expect any single mother worth her salt to put the care and concerns of her children first. Many women are called on to play the role of both mother and father, and you can expect that her children's needs, whatever they may be, will be paramount to her. Being jealous of her time will likely be counterproductive.

Give Her Space
Many single mothers are reluctant to introduce their children to a man until they are certain that he will be sticking around for awhile. Be respectful of her need to not allow her kids to bond with someone who may not actually play any long-term role in their lives. If this is frustrating, try to remember that what she is demonstrating is loyalty to her kids and a desire to protect them from needless harm. These are positive character traits, even if it takes you longer to progress in the relationship than you normally might. If and when you do meet her children, make sure that you have discussed with her what their needs might be as well as how to approach them. She may not be comfortable with public displays of affection or overnight stays until you are firmly ensconced as a significant other in her children's eyes. Communicate about what is appropriate at what times.

Be Flexible
When children are involved, it is difficult to always adhere to a rigid schedule or to assume that things won't go wrong. There will be times when you are having fun and she will need to get home to drive the babysitter home. A child might come down with the flu and derail date night. As a parent, she will be expected to roll with these kinds of punches. If you choose to date a single mother, some of that will be expected of you as well.

Understand Her History
Very few single mothers have not been through some kind of turmoil. Know her history, so you know how to proceed. For instance, a woman who has endured betrayal or abuse may need a slow and steady approach, as opposed to one who found that she was simply not compatible with her ex. Recognize that her ex and the father of her children is likely to be in and out of her life. That in itself can bring stress to a good relationship. The key is good communication on both sides and a pact to put aside any jealousy.

Offer Gestures Frequently
One of the hardest things about being a single mom is the lack of time to do anything for yourself, the exhaustion in the evenings after wrestling children to bed. Offering frequent small gestures speaks pure romance to the tired, overworked single mother who has to spend so much time caring for others and gives her own needs the back burner. Drop by unexpectedly to give her a back or foot massage after a rough day. Buy her that necklace that she has been eyeing, but you know she doesn't have the budget for. Distract the kids for a few hours so she can sit down uninterrupted and catch up with a friend online or go grocery shopping on her own. These kinds of things are the candy and flowers to a single mother (not that those go over badly, either). Give her moments where she is allowed to be taken care of. Speak her language in terms of what would help her propel the relationship forward.

Date a Man With a Daughter

Some daughters of single dads may be possessive or unwilling to share him with another girl. Daughters of a single dad may get jealous when he starts dating, and may make it difficult for the woman coming into the relationship. The daughter may also have strong feelings about not needing another mother or having someone try to replace her mother, though that's likely not your intent. Tread lightly, move slowly and be kind when dating a man with a daughter. It may be difficult at first, but as time moves on, the three of you may really enjoy each other.

Meet the dad for dates when it does not interfere with his daughter's time. Catch a matinee movie when she's in school or save your dates for times she's not staying with her dad.

Date for a while, several weeks to several months, before suggesting you meet his daughter. There's no need to rush a meeting when you don't know how stable your dating relationship is or where it might be going.

Get to know his daughter after you've been introduced. Take her out for lunch or go to a movie with her. Become her friend, not a substitute mom.

Include his daughter on some of your dates. Show her you're not trying to take her father away but want to share his attention and affection.

Leave the disciplining up to the father. Do not reprimand his daughter or instill new rules for her. She will likely not respect you and could resent your acting like her parent.

Give her some space. She may not be comfortable with her dad dating, or might not want to open herself up to the possibility of another failed relationship. Let her move your relationship ahead. Be patient and willing to move slowly with her.

Tips & Warnings

If the girl is still in elementary school, bring her small gifts and treats when you visit her and her dad. Give older daughters gift certificates to their favorite stores or take them for a mani/pedi. Small gestures like these just show the girl you are thinking of her.
Don't make promises or commitments to the daughter you cannot keep. She will likely keep track and be hurt when you cancel plans or don't follow through. You will not earn her trust or respect.
