Castor Oil Benefits for Babies

Use castor oil as a natural remedy for a baby’s dry skin, hair and nails, aches and pains and colic. Babies will benefit from castor oil’s healing properties; however, parents should only use castor oil topically on clean, dry skin where the skin’s surface is unbroken. Parents should always consult a doctor before administering castor oil, and parents should never attempt to diagnose a baby themselves. Avoid applying castor oil near the eyes and mouth, and clean treated areas after administering castor oil as babies may transfer excess oil to their eyes or mouth.

Colic
Use castor oil externally for a natural colic remedy. Heat a bottle of castor oil by bringing a pot of water to a simmer and placing the castor oil bottle in the hot water. Loosen the castor oil’s cap to prevent the bottle from bursting. According to the website Healthy.net, allow the oil to heat for a few minutes until you see little bubbles form at the bottom of the pot. Test the oil’s temperature on the inside of your wrist to ensure the oil isn’t too hot for the baby’s skin. Massage the oil on baby’s abdominal area in a clockwise motion.

Skin and Hair
Castor oil moisturizes skin, clears blemishes and warts. Massage warm castor oil on the affected area. Always test the castor oil on the inside of your wrist to ensure the temperature hasn’t become too hot or cold. Parents can use castor oil on a baby’s hair, skin and nails to moisturize tender areas. Don’t apply oil to areas near eyes, lips, genitals or anus. Check the baby’s skin for cuts, and avoid these areas when applying the oil.

Aches and Pains
Relieve sore muscles with a castor oil pack. Soak a piece of flannel in warm castor oil. Apply the pack to the sore area. Most castor oil pack recipes will encourage people to wrap the pack in plastic wrap. While this technique works well on adults, parents should avoid using plastic wrap on babies as the wrap may become a choking hazard. Always consult your doctor before administering a castor oil pack on a child’s skin.

Warnings
Parents should only use castor oil topically on babies. Never feed a baby castor oil as it has toxic properties. Never apply castor oil to areas on a baby’s skin where the surface has been broken. Women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should not use castor oil topically or ingest it internally. Always check with your doctor before using castor oil as a remedy.
