What Is Process Capability

There are many ways of measuring the success and ability of products. Process capability is one of these ways. Understanding process capability can help you test your products and see if they are up to standard.

Definition
Process capability measures the effectiveness of a process in creating a product. It measures how well a creation process produces the product, including cost efficiency and strength of the product.

Determining
There are many tests that test process capability. For example, a cost efficiency test for t-shirts would take into account the amount of material used, the string used to sew it, the electricity used to run the process and any other variables. If the cost is higher than the price of the shirts, it is inefficient.

Use
Manufacturers test their processes using process capability. Scientists also test process capability in their labs.

Importance
Maximizing process capability and keeping processes efficient can save manufacturers a lot of money. As a result, they can charge less for their products and pass the savings along to the consumer.

Examples
A shoe sales company notices that the shipping time on their orders has been getting longer and longer. They carefully study the process, from the way the shoes are boxed to the trucks, the drivers, and the routes they take. This information is used to create process capability charts. Based on the charts, the company can eliminate whatever is slowing the process down, such as a poorly planned truck route.
