Get Married in Costa Rica

Many couples fall in love with Costa Rica on vacation and then return there to get married. Costa Rica consists of several islands that are full of things to do, see and adore. Sandy white beaches, private coves and lagoons and the warm sun--what more could a couple ask for! This tropical paradise is a popular choice for a wedding ceremony, but know the marriage requirements before you go.

Fill out the questionnaire that a Costa Rican lawyer will send you before you arrive. When you start the marriage process, a lawyer will send you an email with questions about you and your partner. This form will include questions about nationality, birthplace, current address, occupation and birth names.

Have two witnesses and ask them to present their passports to legalize the marriage license and ceremony. They might also be asked a few questions to certify who they are.

Bring your passports and any other important information you might need such as birth certificates, personal identification and your driver's license. This information will help the government check your identity.

Hire a a lawyer if you are planning on having a wedding outside of the Catholic Church. This lawyer will be able to file all the necessary documents needed for the Costa Rican Civil Registry.

Make sure both of you are over the age of 18. If you are over 15 and under 18 years old, you need your parent's or guardian's permission for the wedding.
