Indian Wedding Hairstyles

For every bride, the perfect hairstyle is a must on the wedding day. From a basic updo to long and flowing locks, the right hairstyle is a gorgeous compliment to the dream dress. The Indian bride typically has long hair; it is customary for Indian brides with short hair to get extensions for the wedding. Consequently, most of the Indian wedding hairstyles listed below are for long hair.

Traditional Bun
A very common hairstyle for an Indian bride is a traditional bun. The hair is gathered together tightly and twisted to form a large bun. Hair adornments such as flowers, jewels and beads are added to the bun to make the style more elaborate.

Traditional Updo with a Twist
For this updo, sections of the hair are curled and pinned up. All of the curls take on the shape of a bun when they have all been pinned. Hair accessories can easily be added to this style, which can work well with medium-length hair.

Side Bun
A twist on the typical Indian bun is a bun moved to one side of the head. Although this look is not for every bride, it can be a lovely style for many. A side bun is perfect for a bride with well-defined cheek bones and prominent eyes. The hair is dried thoroughly, and then pulled into a low, puffy bun. Again, hair adornments are very common for Indian brides.

Traditional South Indian Braid
Long hair is parted at the center, and then pulled back from the face. The hair is braided with flowers twisting around the braid. Gold jewels are usually used to adorn the center part; these jewels often hang down onto the forehead with beautiful beadwork and other embellishments.

Twist Updo
The hair is pulled back tightly at the neck and twisted upward. The twist is pinned in place. The hair that protrudes from the twist at the top is curled and pinned. The twist can be adorned with flowers, jewels or decorative hair pins. Small sections of hair above the ears can be pulled down and curled into flowing ringlets that frame the face.

Ringlets
Another common Indian wedding hairstyle is allowing the medium to long hair to remain down. Divide the hair into many small sections and curl them into tight ringlets. Leave the hair in the curls, using hair products to ensure their position. For this style, the curls are not combed through, but instead left as spirals. Flowers and other accessories are common in this style as well.
