Facebook is a massive social networking website that enables users across the country and around the world to stay connected with friends and family. You can share stories, post pictures, even chat with friends using Facebook's native chat feature. Like most instant messaging programs, Facebook Chat lets you type certain symbols in your message and have them display as small icons, called emoticons, short for emotional icons. Emoticons are both fun and amusing and can add a personal touch to your chat sessions.
Open a Web browser and navigate to the Facebook Emoticons website at Fbemoticons.com to view a full list of icons that work in Facebook chat. Each requires that you type certain keystrokes to create the icon. For example, if you type this symbol -- <(") -- Facebook will replace it with a penguin icon when the message appears on your chat partner's screen. Locate the icon you want to type from the list and make a note of the keystrokes required to create the icon.
Navigate to Facebook.com and log in to your account.
Click on the "Chat" tab at the bottom right corner of the window to access your online friends.
Click on any of your online friends to start a chat with that individual.
Enter your message in the field provided and type the necessary symbols to create the desired icon. For example, if you want to add the penguin icon to a sentence, you would type something like:
My favorite animal is the <(")
Click "Enter" to send your chat message. Facebook will automatically convert your typed symbols into the respective emoticons. You can insert as many emoticons as you wish in your chat messages.
