Become a Volleyball Coach

Becoming a volleyball coach requires time and effort you will need to dedicate to your volleyball team. There are several levels of volleyball, just like most other team sports. Whether you are looking to coach a youth team, high school team or college team, there are basic steps you should take to set a solid base for your coaching career.

Learn the rules for the level of volleyball you will be coaching. Rule-book resources can be found at http://www.sportspectator.com/fancentral/volleyball/rules.html or find a basic volleyball rules book at your local library. Write notes in your notebook.

Become very familiar with volleyball plays and volleyball player positions. Go to http://www.jes-volleyball.com/plays.html and http://www.volleyballadvisors.com/volleyball-positions.html for specific examples. Write notes in your notebook.

Call your local rec league main office to find out when you will need to sign up to become a youth league coach. Or, start applying for other levels of volleyball. Call around to local schools to see if there are any open positions. If there are no immediate positions open, ask if you can volunteer to assist the head coach so you can gain experience.

Use your volleyball and kneepads to practice volleyball hitting, serving, setting and diving techniques. A part of coaching is the teaching aspect. You should be able to easily demonstrate basic techniques for your players.

Assemble a volleyball practice schedule. Pinpoint what your team will be working on in each practice throughout the week. This schedule is more for your benefit than for the players'. Keep notes about your players, their attitudes and what they may need to work on from day to day.
