Google Gmail is a popular Web-based email provider. Emails include a "From" address, which indicates the email address that sent the email to you. However, the "From" address can be forged, or "spoofed." Spoofing email addresses is a common technique used by scammers. Emails that appear to be from people you know or from your bank or credit card companies are not necessarily from them, even if the "From" address says they are. You can view the detailed email message headers, which display the location from which the email originated and the path it took to your email inbox.
Log in to your Gmail account.
Open the Gmail email by clicking it in your inbox.
Click the down arrow to the right of "Reply" at the top-right corner of the email message and click "Show Original." Gmail opens a new browser window or tab with the detailed email message headers.
Read the last "Received:" line on the email headers page. The top "Received:" line reads "Received: from mr.google.com," indicating the that message was received by Gmail's servers. The bottom "Received:" line in the window is the IP address or domain name of the first email server that originated the email.
