Google's Gmail service was launched on April 1, 2004, initially by invitation only. The email service was designed to be sponsored by relevant advertising based on the words contained in incoming and outgoing Gmail emails, and offered users 1 GB of mail storage. Gmail accounts were originally accessible only via the Web. Google added POP and IMAP support by 2007, which lets users connect to their Gmail accounts from most modern email clients, including Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail.
