Basketball Drills for Kids

Basketball drills for kids are an exciting way to teach children how to properly play the game. Conduct the drills for at least half of the practice session, and then have the players scrimmage against each other. Stop the scrimmage frequently, to show the players how to apply the different drill lessons.

Many little kids have a tendency to dribble with the same hand, instead of learning how to also use their weaker hand. Set up 10 cones on the basketball court from foul line to foul line. Have the kids line up behind one of the foul lines, then give the first player in line a ball. Tell the child to dribble between the cones, using the right hand on the way up the court and the left hand on the way back. Once each player has gone through the drill, run it again and use a watch to time each child. Make it a joyful competition and encourage the kids to cheer on their teammates.

Passing the ball during youth basketball drills will teach a child to share, since some kids forget to pass once they have possession of the ball. Have the team lineup on the court, facing a passing partner. Make the players stand five feet apart and give one player a ball. Instruct the passer to bounce the ball to his partner, using both hands. Tell him to try and get the ball to the other player in one bounce. The drill will also help young players learn how to catch the basketball. Run the exercise until all of the players show the proper passing form.

Most kids will be able to make a shot using the correct form if the rim is less than 10 feet high. Have the team form a line in the center of the court. Give the first player a ball, and have her dribble down the court and make a layup. Once she makes the shot, have her go to a spot in the corner approximately 5 feet from the basket. When that shot is good, send the player to inside the free throw line for the next shot attempt. After the child makes the third shot, tell her to go to the back of the line, then send the next player out to perform the drill. Make corrections to a player's shooting form when necessary.

Conduct a simple defensive drill during basketball training sessions. Place four cones on the court in the shape of a square, with each cone roughly 7 feet apart. Have the team pair off and give one ball to each pair. Instruct the player on offense to dribble the ball inside of the square and have the defender try to steal the ball or knock it away. Show the defender the proper way to guard the dribbler and have him keep his arms up to avoid fouling. Run the drill until all of the kids demonstrate the proper defensive technique.
