How to Attack 3-2 Zone Defense

A successful 3-2 defense in basketball depends a lot on how well the team can cover the weaknesses of the defense. The strength of the defense is its superior lane perimeter coverage and rebounding. The weakness is the vulnerability of the inside-open lane and the corners. This is where you will want to aim your attacks, depending on the best set of skills on your team. The most effective way however, it to use a combination of attacks aimed at both the weak points, to frustrate the defense.

Set-up your best three-point shooter at either corner along the baseline. Place your tallest player with the largest frame on the inside lane. Feed the ball to the inside and as the zone collapses to defend the open lane, kick the ball out to three-pointer shoot for an open shot. The objective is to set this up a few times and hit the three-point shots with consistency. The defense will usually respond by kicking out a man to cover the corner.

Work the ball around the perimeter as the games wears on; the key is to make a good percentage of three-point shots taken to keep the defense wary. As the game wears on, the inside lane will open up much more for easy drives to the basket on the inside lane. Take advantage of those opportunities, rather than relying on the three-pointer for the entire game. If you begin missing three-pointers, this can easily open up fast breaks down the stretch allowing the other team to climb back into the game. Once the defense wears down, you want to pound it inside for a more physical punishment

Use your three-point guy on the corner to run to the inside lane once you work the ball inside for an easy dish off and basket. You big guys best option inside is not some much the scoring threat, but his ability to punish defenders with his body. As he scores consistently, coaches will usually make an extra effort to cover him, leaving the corner men easy access to the basket.
