Indiana High School Basketball Rules

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sponsors and regulates all public school basketball and other athletic events in the state. The mission of the organization is to encourage and direct wholesome amateur athletics. Founded in 1903, the IHSAA establishes standards for competition and eligibility and is a member association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which establishes the rules for 17 different secondary sports nationwide. While the IHSAA adheres to the rules established by the NFHS, there are some minor variations.

Rule Overview
The IHSAA is governed by a Board of Director composed of 19 members. This board meets each year to establish the rules and regulations of the Association. The IHSAA Basketball Rule Book states that both "boys' and girls' high school basketball shall be played under the rules of the National Federation of State High School Associations." While the IHSAA follows these rules closely, some of them have been modified specifically for the state of Indiana.

Eligibility Rules
A student cannot be 20 years of age or older prior to or on the date of the State Finals. A player cannot participate as a member of a similar team during the same season. Prior to the start of practice, an athlete wishing to participate in basketball must pass a physical. Strict rules prohibiting athletes accepting money or merchandise from athletic participation are also in place. This includes awards with names of businesses or corporate sponsors. Athletes are not permitted to accept awards designating them as "All-State" or "All-American." Recruiting is also prohibited.

Game Play Rules
Instant replay can be used during the state tournament at the end of the season. Referees are able to utilize the instant replay to determine if end-of-game shots count and if they are worth two or three points. Instant replay is only permitted at the end of the game in order to ensure a quick pace of play. The IHSAA has also set standards for pre-season scrimmaging, stating that a team has a specific time window to participate. A team can scrimmage five days after the start of practice and is permitted to do so until two days before the start of the regular season.
