Petey the Piano was excited to be moving, he had been forced to stay in one place for too long. Often, Petey would feel neglected by the residents of the house he lived in. He was tired of watching them walk by, living out their day-to-day lives without ever giving a thought to playing him. Once in a while, someone would flagrantly use him as a table, placing objects upon his body. Petey didn't think that he could live so indignantly for much longer, and prayed for someone to take an interest in him.
Today, two strong-looking men approached Petey and stood on either side of him. At first, Petey was frightened, thinking their intention was to hurt him. They took firm hold of him and started to move him in the direction of the front door, where Petey would longingly look out whenever it was opened. It was surreal, Petey couldn't believe what was happening! Soon, he was through the door and out into the blissful sunshine of the outdoors. He saw the birds, the clouds, and the cars on the street, Petey was practically overwhelmed with the new sights of his environment. He was captivated by the notion of finally moving somewhere where he would be played, and he was beaming with happiness, even when he was dropped slightly (and rather callously) on the concrete steps for a moment.
The two men halted when they moved Petey to the edge of the street, on a lovely patch of grass between the sidewalk and the road. Petey adored it there, it was almost like when he was on display in the store-front window when he was just manufactured! Almost everyone driving along in their cars paid him a passing glance, and he beamed back at them as brightly as he could, even though he hadn't been dusted for some time. That didn't matter to Petey because he didn't need to attract customers like he did in the store-front window, he was simply biding his time before his current owner completed the move.
Petey sat, and he sat, and he sat until the day gave way to the night, and everything was dark. Petey was directly under a streetlamp, and he remembered the spotlight that was upon him during his days as a concert piano at the local middle school. He remembered those days fondly, he was played practically everyday back then! It was only a matter of time before he started his new adventure in a new place where he would be played probably twice as more than he ever was before.
The minutes turned to hours, the hours to days, and the days to what seemed like eternity. Petey the piano had been sitting outside for far too long, and he was sad, tired, cold, and hurt. He didn't know what to do, it seemed as if he wasn't going to a new home after all. Petey slowly came to terms with the realization that he had been abandoned. His career as a piano was over, he would never again be played and he would never again be appreciated. Petey was devastated and succumbed to a deep depression.
One day, a truck stopped on the side of the road right beside Petey. Petey didn't really pay it any mind, cars stopped periodically alongside the road and this was probably just a coincidence. But suddenly, two strong-looking men approached Petey and stood on either side of him. Was this really happening? Petey felt a surge of excitement, but he sternly reminded himself not to get his hopes up, he was, afterall, an abandoned piano.
The side of the truck read "Unwanted Piano" and it seemed to Petey like an angel wrapped in steel. Petey was loaded into the truck next to other pianos, he had never seen another piano except for his short days on display. They were just like him, abandoned and looking for a home. But they were incredulously happy! "How on Earth can abandoned pianos be happy?" Petey wondered.
The other pianos told Petey that they would eventually be going to good homes, homes that will want to play them and homes that will treat them like pianos. Apparently, "Unwanted Piano" takes abandoned pianos that are still in working order, like Petey, and sells them to people who want a piano. Petey and the other pianos in the truck were among the saved! Petey was ecstatic, the dump would no longer be his next destination! Petey waited in anticipation for the new life ahead of him.
