We Must Preserve Native Companies in Alaska

The Alaskan Native corporations or ANCs are exclusive business institutions that have not only survived the recession successfully, but also grew haphazardly. The corporations have won contracts in most of the states and every major sector in the nation. The Alaska Native corporations, unlike the traditional tribal organization, are more of a modern representation of the tribal people in Alaska.

When congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1971 to appease the Alaskan Natives by settling the tenure and land ownership issues, so that the Trans-Alaskan pipeline may be constructed, more than 200 village corporations were organized and by the year 1973, approximately 75,000 Alaskan Natives had enrolled as shareholders. It was then, that the Alaska Native Corporation was brought into being, encumbered with the task of assisting their shareholders and the coming generations of the Alaskan Natives.

These Native corporations create economic and social benefits for the Alaskan Natives in the form of dividends and distributions, employment and income and many more. They are also responsible for providing benefits like training, scholarships, cultural programs and community development programmes. The dividend distributions of ANCs are made in such a way, so as to have a bigger social advantage and financial influence on the income of shareholders. They are made to improve the quality of life of the shareholders. It is the presence of native companies in Alaska that is helping the impoverished region progress and achieves economic independence for the tribal population. It is the responsibility of the ANCs to manage the remaining lands of the shareholders and also protect the Native Alaskan culture, by organizing several culture and language preservation programs.

The Native corporations are dedicated to recruiting, developing and training Native employees. These efforts have gone a long way in providing a trained workforce for all employers in Alaska. Thus, these companies are now led by young and educated Native shareholders. The ANCs or the Alaska Native Corporations aim at gaining not only capital profits, but also social benefits for the Alaskan Natives. These native corporations keenly seek business and investment opportunities, to provide work and a livelihood for the Alaskan Natives in the remote area.
