How to Hold Baseball Bat

Before you learn how to hit a pitch, you must learn how to properly hold a baseball bat. Power and contact derive from your ability to control your bat throughout your swing. That all starts with your grip.

Put your non-dominate hand on the bottom. If you're right handed, you're left hand goes onto the bottom of the bat.

Place your dominate hand on top of the other hand.

Line your knuckles up so when you look down your knuckles form a straight line.

Keep your fingers loose while swinging. You may notice the pros wiggling their fingers while at the plate to keep their fingers loose.

Hold your bat at a 45-degree angle when waiting for a pitch you want to hit. Keep your back elbow close to your body.

Make sure your bat is a good weight and length for your body. If you're having problems keeping it in position or if your swing is too slow, the bat is too heavy for you. Children should hold their bats out from their body at a 90-degree angle. If your child can't hold the bat in place for 20 seconds, give him a lighter model.
