Positions on Girls Basketball Team

The only difference between girls basketball and the mens game is the size of the ball; the men's ball is one inch larger. The size of the floor and hoop, the height of the rim and the role of each position remains the same. Each of the five on-court players perform a different role.

Five Positions
The five on-court positions are point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. These positions are also referred to as numbers, with one being the point guard, two the shooting guard, three the small forward, four the power forward and five the center. Generally, you'll see the girls on the court fall into position by height, with the shortest playing point guard and the tallest playing center. But skill set and athleticism can also play a role in defining a position.

Different Roles
The point guard usually brings the ball up the floor, calls plays and passes the ball to setup the offensive. The shooting guard is usually a jump-shooting threat, but is also a good ball handler. Small forwards are versatile; tall enough to tangle down low and athletic enough for the open court. Power forwards rebound, block shots, play defense with energy and post up. And centers are usually the tallest players on the floor. These girls defend the rim with their size and play near the hoop offensively.
