Tips to Play Home Run Derby

If you don't have the patience for a real game of baseball and just want to slug it out and hit home runs, home run derby is a good contest for you. There are two ways to play home run derby--playing nine innings, as they did in the 1950s TV show, or playing to ten outs, as they do in Major League Baseball each year before the All Star Game.

Determine which player will bat in the visiting half inning and which will bat in the home half. The visiting player will bat first.

Begin play by having a pitcher throw batting practice style pitches to the visiting batter. The batter can let as many pitches as he wants go by, but each time he swings, it will result in either an out or a home run. Any ball that doesn't clear the fence in fair territory is an out.

Pitch to the batter until he accumulates three outs. Then, the home batter should bat in the same manner and with the same rules that the visiting batter did.

Play nine innings and declare the player who hit the most home runs in nine innings the winner. If the score is tied, play extra innings until someone ends an inning with a higher score.

Ten Outs
Decide which player will bat first. Have a pitcher throw batting practice pitches to the batter. The batter can choose to swing or not swing, but every time he swings, it will result in either an out or a home run. A batted ball is an out if it does not clear the fence in fair territory.

Play until the batter accumulates ten outs. Then, it is the next player's turn to bat. Play until he accumulates ten outs. Tally the number of home runs he hit in his turn at bat as his score.

End the contest once everyone has had a chance to bat a full round. The winner is the player who hit the most home runs in his round.
