Importance of Cardio-Respiratory System

The cardio-respiratory system is actually composed of two systems, the cardiovascular system and respiratory system. They work together to ensure your body has the oxygen it needs to sustain itself. Both systems are crucial for life, being made up of your heart, lungs, blood vessels and airways. An efficient cardio-respiratory system is necessary for good health and fitness. Moreover, fitness and your cardio-respiratory system each have an effect on one another. Your cardio-respiratory system is important to the flow of blood throughout your body which in turn spread oxygen and nutrients vital for your entire body to function.

Respiratory System
The respiratory system consists of your trachea, bronchi and lungs. Your trachea is also known as your windpipe. It is a tube connecting your mouth and nose to your bronchi. Bronchi are tubes that continue the flow of oxygen in your body by connecting the trachea to your lungs. There are two bronchi in your body; one connecting to each lung. When you breathe through your nose or mouth you allow oxygen to travel through your trachea into your bronchi and finally into your lungs for use in the heart.

Cardiovascular System
The cardiovascular system consists of your heart, arteries and veins, which allow blood to flow through your body. By pumping oxygen, your heart pushes the blood, which carries nutrients and oxygen to all organs and tissues in the body.

Working Together
As you inhale, oxygen goes through your airways and into your lungs. From there your heart pumps the oxygen into your blood so your body can circulate it and nutrients required to maintain health. An efficient cardio-respiratory system allows for the flow of oxygen and blood in a manner conducive for good health. This means that oxygen and blood easily flow through your body for use in muscles, tissues and organs. An inefficient cardio-respiratory system can result in poor health as the oxygen and blood do not get to all parts of the body. Any snag in the system can have reciprocal effects on other areas of the body.

Importance of a Healthy Cardio-respiratory System
Having an efficient cardio-respiratory system results in good health and longevity. The risk for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, cholesterol issues, arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke are reduced when your cardio-respiratory system is efficient. Furthermore, it allows other areas of your body to get what it needs to function properly. An example given by the American Heart Association discusses the relationship between your cardio-respiratory system and kidneys as one that depends on the vital flow of oxygen. If your cardio-respiratory system is not efficient, neither will your other systems.

Fitness and the Cardio-respiratory System
Exercise is important to maintain an efficient cardio-respiratory system. Performing at least 150 minutes of exercise per week is recommended for cardio-respiratory efficiency. Simultaneously, an effective cardio-respiratory system will also aid in your exercise as it will allow for increased performance and stamina. Aerobic exercises are the best as they allow your body to obtain more oxygen as well as get your heart pumping. Harvard Medical School states aerobic exercise should be the focal point of any exercise program. Examples of aerobic exercise include: running, jogging, walking, cycling, swimming and dance.
