Tips to Be a Better Man

Becoming a better human is a process that occurs throughout our lifespans. By using respect and connection, showing others you care, being open to new things and working hard and being mindful, you can be a better man.

Use Respect and Connection
When interacting with others, whether it be work colleagues, friends, your spouse or your children, use respect and connection to communicate. Instead of barking orders, open yourself up to listening to what others think. By gaining a deeper insight into the people around you, you may find additional ways that you can improve in the long term. For instance, if you are perceived as being harsh, adopting connection as a relating strategy will likely reduce stress and improve your relationships. Not only will you feel better, but those around you will as well.

Show Others You Care Through Your Actions
Those who perform kind acts tend to be more popular with peers and have an enhanced sense of well-being, according to research published in 2012 in the Public Library of Science. Though this research involved adolescent subjects, the increase in pride and happiness we feel when we do something nice for others persists into adulthood. Find small ways you can assist others, whether it’s opening a door for a stranger, making dinner for your family or sending your wife a love note in her briefcase. The more kindness you put out there, the better you’re likely to feel, and those around you will be more likely to see you as a better man.

Be Open to New Things (Including Hard Work)
If you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done. To be a better man, you have to be willing to try new things — and that includes making changes in your life or your attitude. If you are resistant to change, identify why the idea bothers you. Are you someone who rests your sense of self on your ability to make money but not on your ability to connect? Do you see showing emotions as a “sissy thing” and feel strange about showing kindness towards others? Whatever goals you have for yourself, things will likely become difficult before they get better. Understanding that being a better man takes some effort will reduce any stress you feel about it, and allow you to progress through the process more smoothly. In addition, developing a work ethic that focuses on the process of achieving long-term goals will serve you well in any area of your life.

Be Mindful
Mindfulness decreases absentmindedness and reduces anxiety, anger, worry and difficulty controlling emotions, reports research published in 2012 in the Journal of Clinical Psychology. Mindfulness practice includes observing your feelings without judging them, and your emotional responses without reacting to the physical sensations that come with feelings like anger. By paying attention to what your body does, and separating yourself from negative emotional responses, you will be more able to handle any negative emotions that arise, and reduce blowups with others. This will help you feel better overall and give you a head start towards becoming a better man.
