What to Study to Work on Oil Rig

Working on an oil rig is usually an extremely well-paid job, even if you have the lowest-salaried entry-level job on the rig. One of the main reasons for the relatively high salaries for offshore workers is the higher risk factor involved and the fact that workers need to live on the rig for many weeks at a time. Educational requirements depend entirely on the specific job, as they do in any other industry. Oil rigs employ many workers from engineering experts to controllers, cleaners, cooks and other manual laborers.

Entry-Level Jobs
For the most part, entry-level jobs do not require an extensive education as long as you have finished compulsory schooling. As with any job on an oil rig, entry-level positions will require you to be in a good state of health and physical fitness and have the ability to commit to a long-term contract and work hard throughout it.

Specialist Jobs
Many more advanced jobs exist for specialists on oil rigs. With a large amount of machinery on board any rig, a team of engineers must maintain the rig constantly. Such jobs generally require a higher level of education and a diploma in one of the engineering disciplines. A large number of the employees on an oil rig are drilling engineers, also known as "mud engineers."

Experience
Far more important in many cases than actual qualifications is experience. Among the most common oil rig jobs are those for roustabouts and other manual laborers, for which a good knowledge of mechanics will prove extremely helpful. If you have worked on construction sites or other jobs involving physical labor, especially those involving mechanics and engineering, you will have a far higher chance of getting a job on an oil rig regardless of your actual educational credentials.

Other Considerations
As with any job of any type, an extended education in the field for which you apply can only be beneficial. Depending on your country, you may also have to take a short course beforehand that will provide you with a relevant safety certificate. You must also pass various physical examinations and must be at least 18 years old.
