Buck the trend of dressing up as a famous actor or musician and go to your costume party as a literary character instead. Choose a character from your favorite book, whether it is a modern book or a classic. This is a good idea for adults as well as children, as it teaches them that books are cool, too. While most kids will probably want to dress as a character from a children's book, adults can choose those characters as well.
Harry Potter
People of all ages love the Harry Potter series of books. Dress up like a character from the book. Go as Harry Potter by wearing a pair of khaki pants and a striped shirt. Make the Hogwarts logo on a piece of paper and pin it to your shirt. Wear a pair of round glasses and draw Harry Potter's scar on your face. If you want to choose a scarier Harry Potter character, try dressing up as Hogwarts' headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Wear a long gray wig, a long gray beard and a black robe.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Before "The Wizard of Oz" was a popular movie, it was a popular book, called "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Dress up as a character for this movie and people will instantly know who you are because the characters are so recognizable. Dress up as the tin man by wearing shiny silver pants and a matching top. Make a cone shaped hat out of poster board and paint it with shiny silver paint. You could also dress as the Scarecrow by wearing a pair of blue jeans, a flannel shirt and a straw hat. Stuff your clothing with straw so that it sticks out of the edges. Alternatively, dress as the main character, Dorothy. Wear a blue checked dress paired with ruby red slippers. Carry around a dog stuffed animal to represent Toto.
Great Expectations
If you are a fan of Charles Dickens' book "Great Expectations," dress up as Miss Haversham. Miss Haversham never left her home, but was dressed quite formally. Go to a thrift store and choose an old-fashioned wedding dress or formal gown. Rip the gown a bit and use dirt to make it look dusty. Wear the dress, along with a lot of makeup and drawn-on wrinkles.
The Little House on the Prairie
For people who loved "The Little House on the Prairie" books as a child, take yourself back in time and dress as Laura Ingalls Wilder. Wear a long dress or a skirt with a long sleeved, button down top and flat boots. Make sure the clothes don't look flashy at all. Put an apron on over the outfit and wear your hair in a French braid.
