Physical Appearance in Dating

It is human nature to judge others by their physical appearance. In fact, people often aren’t aware they are making assumptions based on looks, according to author Leonard Mlodinow, in an article for the Psychology Today website excerpted from his book “Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior.” Our unconscious mind uses visual information as a starting point to shape our perception of others, says Mlodinow.

We Make Assumptions
According to the article “You Are Judged by Your Appearance,” on the Forbes website, people who are well dressed, impeccably groomed and fit are perceived to be putting more effort into a relationship or a job than their frumpy, overweight, poorly coiffed counterparts. A myriad of assumptions are made based upon appearance, which define our relationship choices and even determine how much money we make and what jobs we get in the first place.

Blame It on the Brain
Social scientists say our snap judgments on appearance are our brains trying to quickly make sense of a lot of information. In ancestral times, the ability to decide if someone was dangerous or not based on his appearance could mean life or death, according to Princeton professor of psychology Susan Fiske, in the New York Times article “Yes, Looks Do Matter.” Pretty people attract the positive attention of others and therefore get more practice at social skills, according to Fiske.
