Tips to Use AAA to Tow a Vehicle

The American Automobile Association (AAA), or Triple A, is an automobile club that serves North America. It is a not-for-profit organization that provides member services through its independently operated clubs. The free emergency tow service is among one of the more popular reasons members choose to join AAA. Other member services include travel assistance, vehicle locksmith services and discounts at numerous vendors nationwide. There are three membership levels: Classic, Plus and Premier. Each level provides free towing services to the cardholder. Motorists have been using AAA since 1902.

Step 1:
Sign up with AAA. You must be enrolled in membership prior to receiving any member benefits. The membership levels that AAA offers vary in price and benefits. Once you determine which membership level suits your needs best, call AAA or visit their website to enroll.

Step 2:
Always carry your membership card. You will need this card number when requesting your car be towed. The towing contractor may request to see your AAA card to verify membership prior to towing your car. If you do not have your card on-hand, you may still be able to use your membership benefits. If this is the case, ask the operator to notify the towing contractor that you do not have your card with you.

Step 3:
Call AAA’s emergency road service line at 800-AAA-HELP. The phone number is also listed on the front of your card. The emergency road service line is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. An operator will take down your information and will contact a towing contractor to meet you on-site.

Step 4:
Do not leave the location. You must be present at the location you gave the operator when the towing contractor arrives. If the towing contractor does not see you with the car, he will most likely leave.

Step 5:
Once the towing contractor arrives, show him your AAA membership card. He will load your car onto the tow truck and then will take it to a predetermined location. As long as you are within your membership usage allowances, the tow should be at no cost to you. Each membership level offers different milage limits for the tow. If you have a Classic membership, the tow can be up to five miles. The AAA Plus membership allows a tow of up to 100 miles. The AAA Premier membership allows a tow distance of up to 200 miles.
