Safety Factors in Equipment Design

The safety factor, also called the factor of safety or FoS, determines how much margin must be designed into a product. If a bridge is expected to withstand 1,000 tons of load on a daily basis, the minimum load it must be designed to handle is 1,000 tons. A safety factor of 2 will result in a bridge that can handle 2,000 tons before failing. As the safety factor is increased, the amount of protection within the design is increased. Increasing the safety factor increases the cost of the design. How then do designers determine the correct safety factor to use in their design?

Review applicable laws for the project. The legally required safety factor is the minimum safety factor to use
for the design.

Read the design requirements or contractual specifications for design codes to be followed. Use any safety factor called for in building codes or in the design codes used by the customer. Products can be designed with a higher safety factor than contractually required, but must at a minimum meet the contract terms.

Determine if the actual material to be used in manufacture was tested or if a representative material was tested. If an actual material sample that will be used in manufacturing was tested, use a safety factor of 1.3 in the design. If a representative but similar material was used instead, use a safety factor of at least 2.0.

Find out if the material tests were performed in a room temperature lab or in identical conditions to equipment operation. If the material testing was done in conditions similar to actual operating conditions, use a safety factor of 1.3. If material testing was done in an indoor lab and operating conditions will be moderately challenging, use a safety factor of at least 3. If the operating conditions are far more corrosive or variable than in the lab, use a safety factor of at least 5.

Use the standard safety factor of 1.25 unless otherwise specified. This can be rounded up to 1.3 to ensure adequate margin.
