Tips to Label a Product

Labels not only identify and set your products apart from competitors' products, but they also provide the essential information consumers need to make good buying decisions. While the type and amount of required information depends on the product you are promoting, several best practice guidelines apply to all types of product labels.

Choose a label shape and size in line with the size and color of the container or package, and decide whether to use a single label or one label on the front of the product and one label on the back. Single labels typically feature the principal display on the left side of the label and the product information panel on the right side. Front and back labels typically feature the principal display on the front label and the product information panel on the back label.

Select fonts that help your label stand out and are easily readable, both from a distance and up close. The OnlineLabels website recommends using no more than two different fonts to avoid diluting your message and making the label difficult for a customer to read. Get creative with fonts instead of settling for common fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman. Consult with a graphic designer or look for free or low-cost fonts on Internet sites such as CreativePro, Fontspace or 1001FreeFonts.

List the information you plan to include in the principal display panel, or PDP. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission requires all PDPs to include the name of the product, your company name and net quantity or measurement information in both metric and pound units. Most PDPs also include branding tools such as a logo or company motto.

List the information you plan to include in the information panel. Include common information, such as contact information for your business, an ingredient list in descending order by weight, any applicable instructions and bar code data. Review U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeling guidelines to make sure information panels for foods, drugs, cosmetics and medical products contain the required information and warnings.
