An engagement party isn't as easy to dress for as a wedding. An informal engagement party adds an extra complication because "informal" can mean different styles of clothing to different people. To some, “informal” means shorts and a t-shirt, while to others, it means nice clothes that aren't too fancy.
Ask the engaged couple what they will be wearing. Get an idea of what the couple views as “informal.” Otherwise, your idea of informal could appear too dressy or too shabby.
Find out the party's location and predicted weather. You might be able to get away with shorts at one place, while at another, you'll shiver the night away.
Fit your clothing to the theme, but dress originally. For example, don't show up in a hula skirt and fake coconut bra for a luau-themed party. Research other types of Hawaiian clothing and dress accordingly.
Keep it simple. Remember that you're not trying to impress anybody. You're celebrating the upcoming marriage of a friend. As a general guideline, wear something you'd wear around that friend at other informal functions.
