The FIRST thing a teen who has been raped needs is unconditional love. Any form of sexual abuse or assault can be a life-shattering even, and you teen needs your comfort and support above all else.
Some parents' initial response to a child's rape is shock, anger, and blame. 'How could you have been
so stupid?' 'What were you thinking?' 'Didn't I warn you?' Please keep these thought sot yourself. Rape is devastating enough without parental judgment or disapproval. And the LAST thing a teen needs is to feel that she 'deserved' to be raped, or that the rape was somehow her fault.
If your DAUGHTER is raped, take her to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately. You can call the police from there. Don't allow her to bathe, shower, change clothes, or even (if possible) urinate before going to the hospital. Any of these actions can destroy valuable physical evidence.
Tell your teen what will happen at the hospital. A doctor will examine her to check for injuries. A rape kit will be used to collect evidence, which may include clothing fibers, hairs, saliva, and semen. Photographs may be taken. A blood test and cervical culture will check for pregnancy and any sexually transmitted diseases. You'll need to visit your teen's own doctor in a week or two to review the results of these tests and learn what, if anything, should be done next.
If your SON is raped (yes, males can also be sexually assaulted), similar procedures will be followed.
Many rape victims suffer from rape-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Your teen will probably need counseling and emotional support after the rape. (You may need some, too). There are organizations that provide specialized counseling. Many communities have rape crisis hotlines that will help you find resources close to you.
While you can't undo what happened to your teen, you can help with the healing process. Face this trauma together in a loving, supportive way.
