How to Avoid Unwanted Teen Pregnancy

It seems like so many people today get pregnant "accidentally". I hate to break it to you, but that's not an accident, it's gross irresponsibility. There are very simple ways to prevent yourself from becoming pregnant, some of these techniques will also protect you from disease. Getting pregnant is actually far from the worst thing that could happen to you as a result of having unprotected sex, so keep that in mind the next time you get caught up in the heat of the moment.

Use a condom, every single time.
Condoms will prevent you from getting pregnancy, and they will also protect you from disease. If you are not responsible enough to use a condom to protect yourself from a lethal illness, (outside of a long-term, monogamous relationship where both partners have been tested) then please refrain from sex, you are not responsible enough to handle the emotional strain of an unwanted pregnancy.

Talk to your doctor about birth control.
There are many birth control options available to you today. Birth control pills, the patch, and the depo provera shot are all hormonal methods of birth control. Some people are sensitive to the hormones and may have side effects. Luckily, there are other forms of birth control such as IUDs, diaphragms, cervical caps, etc. Make an appointment with your doctor, or go to planned parenthood to find the right birth control for you.

Avoid abusing alcohol, and using drugs. Getting drunk and/or high at a party puts you at risk to do something irresponsible that you might not normally do. It also increases your risk of passing out somewhere and being raped by one or more men. It might not be fair, but it's reality. You need to do what you can to protect yourself, and putting yourself in the position to be violated is something that you will regret later. Especially if you find yourself pregnant or infected by HIV. Don't do that to yourself just to be "cool" in the eyes of immature drug addicts and budding alcoholics.
