One of the most difficult challenges for parents is choosing a parenting style that reflects their convictions, world view and personality traits. The American Mental Health Association names three styles of parenting, and developmental psychologist, Diana Baumrind lists four common parenting styles in her research, which are influenced by socioeconomic status, culture and the size of the family. The type of parenting style that you select will undoubtedly affect your child in areas such as self-confidence, success in school, and social and psychological adjustments.
Step 1
Set goals for yourself as a parent. Ask “How do I want my kids to act in the future?” or “Who do I want to be in charge in our home?” Create a list of character traits, such as a demonstrating a respectful attitude toward self and others, being a good listener and caring for others.Step 2
Make an additional list of what your child needs from you as a parent. Include ideas like direction, boundaries and security. Realize that children often feel safe and loved when their parents set limits and are also more aware other people’s boundaries.Step 3
Learn the different parenting styles to see which one falls in line with your goals. Note that authoritarian parenting is very strict, featuring plenty of rules, discipline and a parent who is in control at all times, while permissive parenting is typically laid-back with very few rules, limits or parental involvement. Note that authoritative parenting is a combination of the other two styles, creating a balance between obedience and letting a child make mistakes. Be aware of the uninvolved parenting style that provides for a child’s basic needs and little else.Step 4
Merge facets of each parenting style that best suit you and your family to create your own effective parenting style. Realize that one parent does not observe only one style of parenting all of the time, but incorporates a combination of styles during different stages of parenting.Step 5
Remember that your child will learn from your behavior along with your words and will approach life in a similar way that you do. Choose to be intentional with your parenting style for successful child-rearing.
