When you sign in to Facebook, you automatically sign into the site's chat system. This means that when anyone looks at his online contacts, you show up. This can be a problem if you do not wish someone -- for example, your parents or a friend who you told you he was busy -- to know you are on Facebook. Unfortunately, Facebook does not offer the option of signing on without appearing online in the chat system. However, unlike some other chat systems, Facebook's chat does not notify your contacts that you have signed on.
Sign in to your Facebook account. This makes you appear as available to chat, but does not notify your friends that you have come online.
Click the small gear-shaped icon in the lower right corner of your Facebook page, immediately below the chat system. This brings up a short list of options.
Click "Available to Chat" in the list that appears to remove the check mark beside it. This makes you unavailable to chat, meaning you appear offline to your friends. Do this as quickly as possible. Because Facebook does not notify your friends when you sign on, the only chance you have of being caught is if one of them spots you before you manage to go offline in chat.
