How to Make Thumbnail for Facebook Profile

Your Facebook profile contains multiple sections that display information, posts, videos and pictures. It displays a thumbnail version of your profile picture on your news feed, the listing of posts from friends and pages you like, and next to each status post you make on your profile. After uploading a main profile picture, you can manually size a thumbnail version of the image or let Facebook generate the thumbnail image.

Recommended Size
Facebook recommends sizing your thumbnail picture to a setting of 90 pixels by 90 pixels. This is half of the minimum suggested size of your profile picture -- 180 pixels wide. These settings are only recommendations set by Facebook. Using a thumbnail setting higher than 90 pixels by 90 pixels can result in a portion of your picture being cropped or not to your liking. Using a lower setting can result in excess whitespace appearing around your thumbnail image.

Making the Adjustment
To adjust your profile picture to a thumbnail version manually, navigate to your profile picture and place your mouse over it. Click the "Change Picture" link. The "Edit Profile" page will open. Click "Edit Thumbnail." Move your cursor over your picture -- a four-point arrow will appear. Move the arrow to adjust the thumbnail picture to your liking or click the check box next to "Scale to fit" to allow Facebook to automatically size the picture to fit in the thumbnail frame. Click "Save" to finalize the adjustment.

Accessing Profile Picture Size
To check the size of a picture you want to use as profile shot, place your cursor on the picture and right-click if using Windows. If using a Mac, press and hold the "Control" key and click the image. Click "Properties," "View Image Info" or similar wording to see the picture's size in pixels, file name and file location. When you're uploading a profile picture to Facebook, the website will warn you with the following message if the image is less than 180 pixels: "The image you tried to upload is too small. It needs to be at least 180 pixels wide. Please try again with a larger image."

Facebook's maximum profile picture size is 200 pixels in width. If you upload a picture larger than 200 pixels, Facebook automatically resizes it to down to 200 pixels in width and proportionally in height. You will not receive a message when Facebook makes this adjustment.

Profile Picture Sources
You can upload a picture for your profile directly from your computer's hard drive or removable drive as well as a drive on a computer network. You can also use a webcam connected to your computer to take a snapshot via Facebook and post it as your profile picture. Facebook does not allow you to use a link to a picture stored on a Web server.
