American Standard Code for Information Interchange (or ASCII) code is a widely accepted coding standard for documents and programs. Letters, numbers and symbols are assigned a specific code. If a program or website such as Facebook recognizes ASCII code, you can use it to insert the corresponding letter, number or symbol. Although you probably don't need to use ASCII code to type letters or numbers into your Facebook status updates, you do need it to insert some symbols including a heart, music note or even a sun.
Place your cursor in a text field in Facebook. You can use ASCII code in your status update, in comments or in Facebook chat.
Press and hold the "Alt" key on your keyboard.
Press the code using the number pad for the symbol you want to appear in your status update or comment. For example, press and hold the "Alt" key and then press the number "3" for a heart symbol. A list of ASCII codes can be found at http://alt-codes.org/list/.
Release the "Alt" key. Your symbol will appear in the text field.
Tips & Warnings
Be sure the number lock is activated on your keyboard. If you are on a desktop and nothing happens when you type the numbers, you need to press the "Num Lock" key.
If you are using a laptop, press the "Num Lock" key and then look for the keys on the right side of your keyboard with numbers printed under the letter. This is your number pad.
If you have no "Num Lock" key, press the "Fn" key, then the "Alt" key and then code.
If this does not work, you can copy the corresponding symbol by highlighting the symbol and then pressing the "Ctrl" key and the "C" key on your keyboard. Then press "Ctrl" and "P" to paste it into Facebook.
