If you want to edit a specific Facebook setting on your iPad, your first instinct may be to launch the main Facebook app and start poking around, looking for a settings screen. While you can edit certain settings with the Facebook app and its companion Messanger app, plenty are found in the iOS 8 Settings app.
Facebook App Settings
You can access the comprehensive Settings screen in the Facebook app for iPad by selecting "Settings" from the main menu, which you open by tapping on the menu icon. The settings you can edit from within the Facebook app are, for the most part, account-related settings, from changing the email address associated with your account to editing your privacy and security settings. Before editing any of these settings, it is worth noting that the settings listed in the app are account-wide settings. If you decide to change your password in the Facebook app, you will have to use that same new password to log in from your desktop computer.
Messenger Settings
Facebook requires its users to install a separate app -- Messenger -- to send and receive private messages. This app comes with its own set of settings, which you can access by launching Messenger and clicking on the "Settings" icon. Unlike the main Facebook app, the settings listed here are app-specific settings and editing them does not affect your main account settings. The settings you can edit within Messenger are mostly related to private message notifications; you can turn off notifications entirely for a period up to 24 hours or modify how they are displayed on the iPad. An additional setting disables or enables synchronization between your Facebook contacts and your iOS contact list.
Notification Settings
By default, in iOS 8, a Facebook notification pops up at the top of your screen and a sound is played every time someone comments on one of your posts or sends you a message. While some may find those notifications helpful, they can also be disruptive, especially if you have many Facebook friends. To edit your iOS notifications settings, launch the Settings app on the home screen and select "Notifications" from the left pane. Tap on either "Facebook" or "Messenger" to display a list of notifications settings. In addition to turning off notifications altogether for the selected app, you can select how many notifications your iPad should display in the Notifications Center and how notifications should be displayed. From within this screen, you can select whether the iPad should play a sound when you receive a notification or whether Facebook or Messenger notifications should be shown on the lock screen.
Facebook Account Integration in iOS
Ever since the release of iOS 6 in 2012, iPad users have been able to link their Facebook account with their device. Doing so enables a series of features, such as the ability to share photos on your Facebook news feed from within the Photos app or to use Siri to post Facebook status updates. Adding your Facebook account to your iPad can be done by launching the Settings app and selecting "Facebook" from the left pane. Enter your Facebook login credentials and tap on the "Sign In" button to complete the process. In this same screen, you can tap on the "Settings" link to edit settings related to how Facebook interacts with iOS.
