My Facebook Down for Maintenance

You are posting photos or updating your status when all of sudden you see a pink box appear on Facebook, telling you you can't access your account because the site is under maintenance. Oddly enough, none of your friends are experiencing this problem. Before you jump to conclusions and think that you've been booted from Facebook or you won't be able to see any of your content again, relax; this is normal and only temporary.

"Improvements to the Database"
Facebook states that the reason it shuts down your account for maintenance because developers are "making an improvement to the database that your account is stored on." That could refer to many processes within the field of Web development, but it basically means that developers are resolving errors, updating code and moving data around so that the website functions smoothly with all of Facebook's applications and features. Improvements like this are incremental. Facebook never shuts the entire site down at once but works on small portions at a time to provide the least amount of inconvenience to users.

Effects on Your Account
Site maintenance does not affect any aspect of your account other than its ability to function smoothly. It does not mean that your account is banned or disabled. Once the site is back up, you will still be able to use your log-in and password information to access your account. Maintenance does not affect any of the data in your account such as personal information and pictures, but it might affect the layout. Facebook notifies users of any major changes in site appearance and function.

Maintenance and Pages
If you maintain a Facebook page, event or group in addition to a personal account encounter a maintenance message, the same process is underway. It has nothing to do with content that you manage and is only a temporary condition. Facebook will clearly notify you if it removes your page due to a violation of Facebook Terms and Conditions.

Maintenance Timeframe
Facebook claims that routine site maintenance takes no longer than a few hours. After a short period, your account or page should be fully functional once again. If it has been non-functional for more than 24 hours, clear your Web browser's cache and cookies in case it is a browser problem and not a Facebook problem. If you still can't access your account or page, submit a Bug Report.
