Smileys give Facebook users a way to express all kinds of emotions beyond typewritten text. When you type the formula for a smiley or emoticon that Facebook recognizes, the system converts it into a corresponding picture, such as a smile or a surprised face. You can use smileys in chat and private messages.
Click the Facebook Chat window on the bottom right of any Facebook page while you are signed in.
Click the name of a friend who is online to initiate chat with that person.
Type :-O or :O in the chat window. Press the "Enter" key.
Tips & Warnings
Typing lowercase "o" as in :-o or :o will create the same emoticon.
Smileys are not converted to pictures in statuses.
