Emoticons are the faces and other images people use on chat applications including Facebook Chat. There are two ways to make emoticons on Facebook Chat. You can enter symbols that will be automatically transformed into pictures, or you can type symbols that look like pictures themselves, including different kinds of eyes. Most people are familiar with using a colon for eyes, semicolon for a wink or the number 8 for glasses. Using the character map on your computer you can come up with more expressive eyes. These are often called "straight-on smileys."
Preparation
Log into Facebook and start a chat session with a friend.
Click the Windows "Start" button, then select "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "Character Map."
Use the character map to find symbols not normally available on your keyboard to make faces with expressive eyes. Alternatively, you can just copy and paste the symbols from the following examples.
Using Automated Emoticons
Enter "^^" into the chat text field to make a face with happy eyes. Type "--" to make squinting eyes. Enter ";-)" to make a wink face. The symbols will be transformed into yellow faces after you press "Enter."
Enter ">:(" to make a face with grumpy eyes. Enter ">:O" to make an angry-eyed face. Enter ":'(" to make crying eyes on a face. Enter "o.O" to make a confused face with one small eye and one large eye.
Put glasses on your eyes by entering "8-)" for eye glasses, or "8-|" for sunglasses.
Using Straight On Smileys
Enter "(???)" to make a straight-on smiley with happy eyes. This will not be transformed into an emoticon. The symbols themselves make the face.
Enter "(>_<)" to make troubled eyes.
Enter "(^_^)" or "( ? ? ? )" or "(^v^)" to make faces with laughing eyes.
