When you are chatting or updating your status on Facebook, sometimes normal letters may not be enough to express what you are feeling. A symbol, such as a smiley face, arrow or pair of musical notes, may be more fitting. Alternatively, you may wish to type a word in a foreign language accurately, complete with accented letters. You can accomplish all of this by using symbols. The precise code for each symbol varies, but the general process is the same.
Go to Facebook. Click within the field in which you wish to type to place your cursor there.
Press the "Num Lock," "num lk" or similar key on your keyboard to turn on Num Lock. If this function is already on, you do not need to press this button.
Press and hold the "Alt" key on your keyboard. While holding this key down, enter the applicable code for the symbol you wish to create on the 10-key portion of your keyboard. You can find the code at Alt-Codes.org. Do not use the numbers that appear above where you type, as these will not work.
Release the "Alt" key after you have entered the code of your choice. The symbol matching that code now appears in the space where you previously placed your cursor.
