Smiley Faces & Hearts on Facebook

Not only is social media changing the way we connect with friends and customers, it's also changing the way we communicate. On top of being able to post instant updates and send messages with words, you can also create "emoticons" -- graphic symbols that illustrate an emotion. As of 2011, Facebook PC users have an advantage over Mac users, as they're able to post more emoticons in their status updates by using a combination of keys. Mac users can post a "heart" emoticon from the keyboard, but they'll have to use an outside Web page to post other symbols.

Emoticons can convey a number of different emotions.Log in to Facebook with your username and password.

Type in a status update in the "What's on your mind?" or "Write Something" box from your Facebook profile or Home page. Do not click "Share" just yet.

Type in "<3" and press "Share." Your update should appear with a heart at the end of it.

Type in a status update in the "What's on your mind?" or "Write something" box, then hold down the "ALT" button on your PC and press the number "1" at the same time. Click "Share." Your status update should appear with a smiley face at the end of it.

Navigate to the Facebook Symbols page, http://facebook-symbols.com/characters/. Click on the emoticon you wish to use from the list that appears on the site and copy it. Navigate back to your Facebook profile and paste the emoticon into your status update, then click "Share." The emoticon should appear just as it appeared on the Facebook Symbols page.
