The Google search engine crawls and indexes millions of Web pages each week. It stores information and data about each page in an online cache. Google usually includes the information in the "description" metatags within the header section of the Web page as the page description in its search engine results. If the descriptions tags are missing or not properly formatted, Google may use information from other sources to describe the page. This might include link information from other sites and online directories, reviews from site users, or snippets of text from the content on the page. To get Google to use a specific meta description, you must properly format the Web page's description metatags.
Launch your usual Web coding and design program, or a plain text editor, such as Microsoft WordPad or Notepad.
Click "File" followed by "Open" to open the Web page with the metatag description that you want Google to use.
Scroll to the header section of the Web page. This comprises all the code between the opening <head> tag and closing </head> tag.
Locate the current description metatag. Highlight the code and delete it. Skip this step if your page doesn't currently have a description metatag.
Type the following code into the Web page, in the header section:
<meta name="Description" content="This page explains how to change the description metatags on a Web page.">
Replace the text following "content" with your own concise Web page description. Try to keep the description to one sentence, or two short sentences so that the entire description appears in search engine results.
Save the Web page and upload it to your hosting server. Google will automatically detect the change when it next crawls your website.
