Golf Camps in Columbia

Columbia, the Palmetto State's capital city, is home to attractions such as the historic South Carolina State House, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum and EdVenture, the largest children's museum in the Southeast. The city also has a variety of recreational options, including boating, fishing and swimming in Lake Murray or hitting the links for a round on one of the region's 15 or so golf courses. Several golf centers and academies put on summer camps that help younger players improve their games.

Columbia Parks and Recreation
The Columbia Parks and Recreation Department runs a series of weekly summer golf camps at its James E. Clyburn Golf Center, named after the state's longtime U.S. congressman. The downtown learning center includes a clubhouse with meeting space, a lighted driving range, covered hitting bay, putting green and a short-game practice area with a bunker and chipping areas. The golf camps run Monday to Friday from early morning to early evening and are for all levels, including beginners. Instruction includes rules and etiquette, strategies of the game, short game and full swing. The center will furnish golf clubs to campers who need them. The Clyburn Golf Center also serves as the year-round home to The First Tee Columbia, a nonprofit foundation that teaches golf and life skills to youth ages 5 to 18.

Fort Jackson Golf Club
Although it's part of the U.S. Army's main installation for basic combat training, 36-hole Fort Jackson Golf Club -- considered one of the finest military golf facilities in the nation -- is open to the public. That includes its summer golf camps, which provide junior golfers ages 6 to 18 with instruction that includes putting, chipping, full swing, etiquette and course management. Three different sessions of the five-day camps are typically offered -- one in mid-June, one in mid-July and one in early August.

Par Tee Golf Center
Kevin Britt Golf Academy, based at the Par Tee Golf Center in West Columbia, puts on several three-day summer camps, typically held every other week from late June to early August. Campers learn the basics of chipping, putting, iron and wood play, etiquette and rules, course management and sportsmanship. Lunch is provided and students compete in a skills challenge on the final day of camp. Participants receive free rounds on the center's miniature golf course, can practice their putting and chipping for free after the daily camp session and also receive a 50 percent discount on buckets of range balls. Campers can attend one camp or all four at a discounted rate.

George Bryan Golf Academy
This golf academy based in the suburb of Chapin typically has several summer golf camps for juniors, including one that's held at Northwoods Golf Course in Columbia. The camps typically last three days, with camps for ages 6 and above lasting four hours. One of the weeks is a Pee Wee Camp for ages 4 to 6 in which the daily sessions are only two hours each. Clubs will be provided for students who do not have their own, and each camper is asked to bring water and a snack.
