Mobile Facebook & Facebook

Mobile Facebook is a version of Facebook meant for mobile devices. Whether with a cellphone or tablet, users can view status updates and leave text messages much as they do on their computer. Mobile Facebook lacks a number of significant features due to the inherent limitations of mobile devices. One advantage Mobile Facebook has over Facebook is the ability to "Check In," or post a current location using the GPS system on the mobile device.

Home page
When users log into Facebook, they are taken to a home page with a left panel of links and a right-hand area for special notifications, or links to events and pages recommended by friends. The middle column features the News Feed, where posts made by friends or liked pages are displayed according to user preferences. Mobile Facebook users see a stripped-down home page with only the News Feed and links to the user's profile, friends list and message inbox.

News feed
The News Feed for each Facebook user page updates itself as friends and liked pages post new messages. Profile pictures accompany each message and the latest comment made about the post. When Mobile Facebook users view their News Feed, they cannot see profile pictures tied to messages or comments. The latest comment is not shown at all. The News Feed for Mobile Facebook users is also much slower to update, although it still notes when the message was posted.

Posting messages
Facebook users can make several different kinds of posts. Status updates are text messages and are the most common Facebook message. Questions are polls that display a question, give users multiple options and then display bar graphs of the results. Users can post video and images from their computer or webcam and create online albums. Messages with links can display a thumbnail preview along with a summary. Mobile Facebook users can view other types of messages, but can only make status updates and comments.

Facebook games
Facebook features a number of online games tied to user accounts. Some of the games are classic board and card games, while others are trimmed-down versions of console video games. Users can invite their friends to join them in games or send and request gifts for use in games. Mobile Facebook does not allow users access to Facebook games or even the Game Request section. The Game Request sections is for viewing invites and gifts from friends.

Check in
Mobile Facebook has a feature called Check In as an alternative to posting a regular status update. The Check In button is located just under the status update field, and when clicked, Check In presents users with a list of locations previously posted by friends. Users can click an item from the list or search for another location and then post their present location as a status update. Check In is not available for standard Facebook.
