Satellite Mapping Programs for Free

Satellite imagery enhances your mapping experience by showing you aerial photographs of areas along your route or of your destination. Use this to examine narrow roads across the mountains or to see what direction a house faces. Most of these satellite images are not in real time; they are updated periodically but won't show you the most recent information, such as a traffic problem.

Google Maps and MapQuest
These free mapping programs allow you to see a satellite image of your entire route or zoom in to see your starting point or destination. On both programs, click on "Satellite" in the upper right corner of the map to change your view. Zoom in to see specific details of your route, complete with road names overlaid onto the image.

GlobalMapper
This satellite mapping software offers a free trial that allows you access to the program for an unlimited time, although the features on the free trial are limited. If you want to export your data, view objects in 3-D or work in more than four files at a time, you must purchase the program, which starts at $399 in November 2011. GlobalMapper shows you topographical satellite maps as well as standard satellite imagery. Developed for more functionality than mapping your route, it helps you calculate the volume of valleys, view shed analyses and create elevation models.

Earth Explorer
This free program offers real-time satellite mapping when you're on the go, whether on land or sea. It shows high-resolution satellite imagery as well as shaded topographical views. Mark places along your route with the program's placemarks, which the GPS will track as you travel. The software will overlay information on the satellite map, such as political boundaries and information on historical events, such as major earthquakes.

Satellite Signals
The satellite photo image viewer shows you the area surrounding any address you enter, including latitude and longitude coordinates. It offers detailed maps for most areas of the U.S., the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe and Japan. Change the view to see a map or terrain image instead of the satellite image if desired. The program provides links to weather-related satellite images of your locations as well.
