A personal heavy bag is a terrific asset, not only for training as a boxer but as a simple, enjoyable way to stay in shape. Setting up your own bag well will require some labor and money, but a proper set-up is critical to reaping the full benefit of your equipment.
Find a place for the bag that will allow it to swing, and allow you freedom of movement on approach from any direction.
Measure the vertical length of your bag and compare it to the distance between the floor and ceiling of your chosen room. You should be able to hang the heavy bag so that its top is a bit above the top of your head, and its bottom is able to swing freely.
Try to find a specific spot to hang your bag that has some heavy-duty mounting areas exposed, such as an I-beam--a steel beam that runs along the ceiling, and has small ridges running along either side. Avoid hanging your bag from weaker ceilings, such as drop or false ceilings, or plaster.
If you are working on a bottom or middle story of a multi-story building, don't proceed with hanging your bag until you have determined whether the swinging back will damage the floor above. If you have any doubt, consult a professional carpenter.
