Several Google services use Secure Socket Layer, or SSL, to encrypt data you send and receive over the Internet. Google services such as Gmail and Encrypted Search use SSL to help ensure hackers or other third parties cannot intercept your email messages or search history. While SSL encryption is certainly useful, it does often suffer from one disadvantage -- it is often slower than an unencrypted service. If you are in an area that does not offer high-speed Internet access or you simply want the Google pages to load faster, you can disable SSL use on the sites rather easily.
Stop Using SSL Encrypted Search in Firefox 3.6 and 4.x
Launch Firefox and click "Tools" on the menu bar. Click "Options" in the drop-down list.
Click the "General" tab. In the "Home Page" text box, replace "https://encrypted.google.com" with "http://google.com" and click "OK."
Restart the Firefox browser. Your home page is now set to go to the classic Google search page instead of the encrypted page that uses SSL encryption.
Turn off Google SSL Searches in Internet Explorer 9
Open Internet Explorer on your computer. Click the "Gear" icon in the upper right hand corner of the browser screen.
Click "Internet Options," then "General."
Delete the "https://encrypted.google.com" link in the "Home Page" box and replace it with "http://google.com."
Click the "OK" button and restart Internet Explorer.
Turn Off SSL in Gmail
Log in to your Gmail account. Click the "Gear" icon in the upper right hand corner of the Gmail screen. Click "Mail settings."
Scroll down to the "Browser connection:" section of the "Settings" tab. Click the "Don't always use https" option.
Scroll down to the bottom of the "Settings" tab page and click "Save Changes."
Log out of your Gmail account. Close the browser and restart it.
Log into your Gmail account again. You should now notice an "http" link in the browser address bar instead of an "https" link. Gmail no longer uses SSL when you log in to your account.
