Turn off Network in Google AdWords

Google AdWords was launched in 2000, with the pay-per-click model introduced in 2002, and has become Google's primary source of revenue. Accounts can be set up quickly online, allowing your advertisements to appear alongside the search results in Google under "Sponsored Links" within hours. When setting up a new advertising campaign you can choose where your ads are displayed, with a choice of search engine only, or also on the display network. The network is based around public sites that choose to display relevant ads, in return for a small portion of the cost-per-click through the Google AdSense program.

Open the Google AdWords homepage in your Internet browser (adwords.google.com). Type in your Google account email address and password, and then click the "Sign In" button to log in to your AdWords account interface.

Click on the "Campaigns" tab, and then click on the name of the campaign you want to edit.

Click on the "Settings" tab for the selected campaign to show all the available options for the campaign.

Click the "Edit" link next to "Networks" in the "Networks and Devices" area. Click on the check box next to "Display Network" to clear the box and deselect the display network option.

Click on the "Save" button to store the new setting. A yellow box will appear at the top of the screen to confirm the setting has been saved. There may be a short delay before the ads stop appearing on the display network.

Tips & Warnings

For most campaigns, you can benefit by turning off the display network first of all and tuning the ad's performance on the search network. When the ad is performing well, the display network option can be turned on if required.
Turning on the content network option can create many more impressions for your ad, which can in turn quickly increase the campaign cost. Ensure a sensible budget is set before enabling the display network.
