Use Basic Editing Tools in Google Docs

As with any word processing program, the key to making Google Docs work for you is to know how to use all of the features to your advantage. Like desktop-based counterparts, Google Docs has a variety of basic editing tools available to help you make your documents and spreadsheets look professional.

Check your spelling with Google Doc's basic spell-check tool. Go to Tools -> Check Spelling or click on the "abc" icon in the toolbar. Any misspelled or questionable words will be highlighted in yellow. Click on any highlighted word to see a number of suggested replacements. Correct your words and click on the icon again to turn off spellcheck.

Discover how many words, characters, spaces, paragraphs and sentences you've used with the "Word Count" tool. Go to Tools -> Word Count to see a breakdown of these statistics as well as information about the readability and grade level of your document.

Change font type, size and spacing. The default font in Google Docs is "Verdana" and the default size is 10pt. Use the drop-down menus in the toolbar to choose a different font and size. Once you've chosen them, the document will automatically reformat to the new selections. You can also go to Edit -> Document Styles to change the font and its spacing.

Replace words or phrase by using the "Find and Replace" tool. Go to Edit -> Find and Replace to type in the words to find and the words with which to replace the phrase. Click "Replace All."
