Google gives everyone free user accounts and data storage space on the servers. Google Docs, an online document storage service, allows you to upload any type of file. Even if you are not low on hard drive space, you can still use the service to back up important data files and documents. Once you upload your data, you can access it from any computer that has a connection to the Web.
Proceed to the next step if you have a Google account. Otherwise, visit the Google signup page and create a free account. Google's help will guide you through the process. The site will ask you to create a Google user ID and password.
Navigate to the Google Docs page, and log on to the account by entering your user ID and password. If you are already logged in, the site will not prompt you for logon information.
Click the "Upload" button on the left side of the page, and then click "Basic." The "Upload Files" window appears. You can view the amount of available storage space you have left. Google allows you to upload 1024 MB of data.
Locate the "Select Conversion Options" section, and remove the check mark next to the item that reads "Convert documents, presentations, spreadsheets and drawings to the corresponding Google Docs formats." Since you simply want to back up data, you do not need to convert it into other formats.
Click "Select Files to Upload" to view the "File Upload" dialog window. This window contains a list of your hard drive's files and folders.
Navigate to a file you wish to back up, and click that file to select it. If you wish to upload additional files, hold down your "Ctrl" key and click those files to add them to the selection.
Click "Open," and then click "Start Upload." The site uploads your files and displays an "Upload Complete" message when done.
