How to Do Underhand Serve

Although its detractors claim that the underhand serve is obsolete, it's actually an effective way to put the volleyball into play. The basic technique's straightforward, but gaining consistency and accuracy with the underhand serve takes practice.

Stiffen your left arm and hold it out in front of you. Keep your arm stiff so that the ball isn't wobbling around as you try to hit it.

Squeeze the fingers of your left hand together into an open cup.

Grip the volleyball in your left hand lightly, but firmly.

Pick out a player or area of the court where you want the ball to land. Choosing a target is crucial to developing accuracy and consistency.

Form a fist with your right hand. Swing it back using your entire arm.

Swing your right fist forward into the back of the ball. Make sure your arm accelerates as it nears the ball.

Follow through the ball in the direction you want it to travel. Pointing your hitting arm at the target improves accuracy and distance control.

Tips & Warnings

Swing your arm along in a straight line to improve your consistency and aim.
Avoid striking the bottom of the ball, which will only send it straight up into the sky. Aim, instead, for a spot right below its center line, which will shoot it forward, but will give it enough lift to clear the net.
