Wrap Tape on Baseball Bat

Wrapping a bat with grip tape is an easy way to have more control over your swing. Wrapping a bat with grip tape is easy to do, but there are a specific set of steps you must follow in order to ensure that your grip tape is wrapped correctly. Incorrectly applying grip tape to your bat can negatively affect both your control of the bat and your swing.

Find a comfortable place to sit. You will need to be sitting when you wrap your bat with grip tape.

Remove the grip tape on your bat. Use a knife, scissors or other sharply edged object to cut away at the tape.

Remove the sticky substance left behind by the previous layer of grip tape. Coat the bat's handle with rubbing alcohol and then firmly wipe it off. You can also rub off the sticky layer left behind with sand paper.

Place your bat between your legs with the barrel facing down and the handle facing up.

Wrap a layer of grip tape around the bat's handle, starting at the bottom where the handle meets the knob of the bat. Pull each layer of tape tightly before you wrap it around the bat to ensure that there are no wrinkles or air bubbles in the tape. Slightly overlap each layer of tape to ensure that the handle is completely covered.

Stop wrapping your bat with tape when you get to the top of the handle. The top of the handle is about 10 to 12 inches away from the bottom of the bat.

Cut off the excess tape at the top of the bat's handle.

Grip the bat to see how the tape feels. Take a few practice swings to test your grip on the bat. If you need more tape you can apply another layer atop the one you just laid.

Apply a layer of finishing tape over your grip tape. You can apply the finishing tape in the same way you applied the grip tape. Not all grip tapes come with finishing tape.
